Our buying advice for Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island

The Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who appreciate a premium single malt whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Isle of Arran and was bottled at a cask strength of no less than 50.4%. This powerful and intensely fruity whisky requires a developed palate. We advise beginners not to start with this type of whisky, as the profile can be too overwhelming. The price of this single malt whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality make it more than worth it.

Flavour notes

The flavour profile is driven first by pronounced fruitiness, with spice clearly present but not taking full control. Floral and woody accents sit more quietly in the background, adding a measured frame.

At 50.4% cask strength, it carries a concentrated presence. Peat smoke does not define the profile, allowing the fruit-led and spicy side of this 21-year-old Arran to remain central.

Product info about Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island

Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is a 21-year-old single malt from the Isle of Arran, bottled at cask strength at 50.4%. As part of the Explorers Series, its name anchors it firmly in place: Kildonan & Pladda Island. That gives the release a clear island identity without needing to overstate the point.

The appeal here lies in the combination of age, natural strength and limited availability. After 21 years of maturation, the whisky has had time to develop depth, while the cask strength bottling keeps its character direct and energetic. With 9,000 bottles released, and now down to the last bottles, it has become a particularly noteworthy Arran within the Drankenshop Broekmans selection.

In style, the profile is led by fruit, with a clear spicy side and more restrained floral and woody accents. Peat smoke is not part of the picture, keeping the focus on Arran's mature, fruit-driven side.

About ARRAN

Arran Whisky is made at the still fairly young Lochranza Distillery. The first plans for it were made in 1993 and the first alcohol ran out of the stills there in 1995. That means they will celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2025, hopefully resulting in a nice 30yo? Stay tuned for that news!

Lochranza Distillery can be found in the village of the same name in the north of the Isle of Arran. That's on the west coast of Scotland, a stone's throw from Glasgow. It's a popular weekend trip from Glasgow, because on Arran you'll find a sort of miniature version of Scotland. A short distance away (the road around the whole island is about 80 km in total) you'll find mountains, valleys, beautiful green meadows, beautiful beaches and everything that makes Scotland so enticing for foodies: fresh produce from the land and sea, and whisky, of course. The distillery's location among the mountains in the north of the island is unquestionably spectacular. So must have thought the eagles who were already living there when the distillery was built. They have since become part of the identity of Arran whisky and you can observe them on site to your heart's content.

The whisky made by Lochranza is much loved. It is characterised by a distinctly fruity character that appeals to novice tasters and experienced whisky lovers alike. The basic range includes whiskies that can now be called modern classics such as the 10yo, the Quarter Cask and the Sherry Cask. All of them are tasty, accessible and affordable whiskies of high quality, carefully blended from the casks aged in their warehouses. The Machrie Moor, the lightly peated version made at Lochranza, is also a favourite of many, but will no longer be produced from 2026, as the group has set up a second distillery in the south of the island making only peated whisky (Lagg Distillery).

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island?

Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island a single cask whisky?

No, Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is not a single cask whisky.

Is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island een goede keuze voor mij?

This Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island a spicy whisky?

Yes, Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island a fruity whisky?

Yes, Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is a whisky with an intensely fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruits and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Is Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island suitable for an Irish Coffee?

Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Arran The Explorers Series N°3 Kildonan & Pladda Island is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
