Flavour notes

The stated flavour profile points first to fruit and spice. Floral tones and wood are present in a lighter supporting role, adding shape without becoming the main focus.

No detailed tasting notes are supplied, so the aroma, texture and finish are not expanded beyond the available information. What is clear from the profile is that peat and salinity are not part of the emphasis; this whisky is framed more by fruit, spice and a modest wood influence.

Product info about Bladnoch 1990 29y

Bladnoch 1990 29y is a Lowland single malt from Scotland, drawn from a single bourbon barrel. Distilled in 1990 and bottled in April 2020 after 29 years of maturation, it belongs to the Wemyss Single Cask range, where the individuality of one cask is the point of focus.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, a whisky like this stands out because it is so clearly defined: one distillation year, one cask type, one bottler, and a long period of maturation. With the last bottles now remaining, it has a quiet scarcity that comes from the facts rather than from any need for exaggeration.

The flavour direction is centred on fruit and spice, with lighter floral and woody elements in support. Peat and salinity are not part of its stated profile, keeping the attention on the bourbon barrel maturation and the particular character captured in this Wemyss bottling.

About UNDIS

Bladnoch is a Lowland distillery, it has known a history of various takeovers and several closures since its founding. After a major refresh in 2015, the distillery officially resumed production in 2017. For a short time, it was then one of only three Lowland distilleries that were actively producing, the others being Auchentoshan and Glenkinchie.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Bladnoch 1990 29y?

Bladnoch 1990 29y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Bladnoch 1990 29y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Bladnoch 1990 29y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Bladnoch 1990 29y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Bladnoch 1990 29y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Bladnoch 1990 29y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Bladnoch 1990 29y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Bladnoch 1990 29y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Bladnoch 1990 29y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Bladnoch 1990 29y a fruity whisky?

Yes, Bladnoch 1990 29y is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Bladnoch 1990 29y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Bladnoch 1990 29y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Bladnoch 1990 29y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Bladnoch 1990 29y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y an independent bottling?

Bladnoch 1990 29y is a whisky of the Undis brand bottled by the independent bottler Wemyss. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Bladnoch 1990 29y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Bladnoch 1990 29y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Bladnoch 1990 29y whisky from Undis is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
