Product info about Tomatin 18y

Tomatin 18y is a Highland single malt shaped around maturity rather than noise. Its 18 years of age give it a composed place in the Tomatin range, while the sherry finish adds a clear stylistic direction without turning the whisky into something smoky or heavily spiced.

The available flavour profile points to a restrained set of impressions: light floral, fruity and woody elements, with peat, salt and pronounced spice absent from the picture. That makes the cask influence and Highland origin feel central to the story, with the whisky presenting itself in a calm, mature register.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see Tomatin 18y as a bottle for those moments when the appeal lies in age, balance of influence and the quiet confidence of a well-aged single malt. At 46% ABV, it also keeps enough strength to feel serious in the glass.

About TOMATIN

At a certain point in the 1970s, Tomatin was the largest distillery in Scotland. The capacity of no less than 12 million liters has meanwhile been reduced to about 5 million liters per year, due to declining whisky sales between 1980-2000. In the first decade of the 21st century, the distillery started to grow again, not least because they shifted their focus from production for blends to the creation of single malt whisky. Today, as much as 65% of their production is intended for single malt, which is quite a lot. Remarkable is that Tomatin maintains very long fermentation periods: the fermentation there lasts at least 168 hours!

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Tomatin 18y?

Tomatin 18y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Tomatin 18y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Tomatin 18y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Tomatin 18y a single cask whisky?

No, Tomatin 18y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Tomatin 18y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Tomatin 18y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Tomatin 18y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Tomatin 18y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Tomatin 18y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Tomatin 18y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Tomatin 18y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Tomatin 18y a spicy whisky?

No, in the flavour profile of this Tomatin 18y whisky there is very little to no significant spiciness at all.

Is Tomatin 18y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Tomatin 18y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Tomatin 18y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Tomatin 18y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Tomatin 18y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Tomatin 18y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Tomatin 18y an independent bottling?

No, Tomatin 18y is an official bottling of Tomatin.

Is Tomatin 18y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Tomatin 18y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Tomatin 18y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Tomatin 18y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Tomatin 18y whisky from Tomatin is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
