Product info about Girvan Proof Strength

Girvan Proof Strength shows Scottish grain whisky with a firmer, more direct voice. Bottled at 57.1% and presented at cask strength, it keeps the whisky close to its natural power rather than softening it into a gentler style.

The bourbon barrel influence brings a light wood note, while the overall profile leans clearly towards fruit. There is no peated character and no pronounced spice in the supplied profile, so the focus remains on fruit, strength and the straightforward Lowland grain style.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we would point out to someone who wants to explore grain whisky beyond the familiar softer image. It is a no age statement release with a clear identity: Girvan, proof strength, bourbon barrel maturation and a fruit-led character with enough intensity to stand out.

About GIRVAN

Girvan is a name primarily associated in the Scottish whisky world with a large grain distillery, located in the Lowlands near the town of Girvan on the west coast of Scotland. The Girvan distillery was established in 1963 by William Grant & Sons in response to changing market conditions and a desire to have more control over the production of grain distillates for their blends. The distillery is known for using modern distillation techniques, including continuous stills instead of traditional pot stills, which results in a relatively light and accessible grain whisky. Girvan produces grain whisky on a large scale that is mainly intended for blends of well-known William Grant & Sons brands, but there have also been a few bottlings released as single grain whisky, often under the label The Girvan Patent Still. These single grain expressions are generally light, subtle and have a soft, somewhat sweet taste, which is typical for grain whisky from the region. Girvan is seen as an important player for grain whisky within Scotland, and is especially known among enthusiasts who want to further explore the diversity of Scottish whisky beyond the traditional single malts.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Girvan Proof Strength?

Girvan Proof Strength is a grain whisky .

Grain whisky is made from a grain other than barley, such as wheat and/or maize. It is distilled in fairly large-scale column stills, also known as distillery columns.

As with malt whisky, in this category you also have 'single grain' whisky that comes from just one distillery, and 'blended' whisky that comes from multiple distilleries. Both variants are not very common.

Is Girvan Proof Strength a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, Girvan Proof Strength is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Girvan Proof Strength a single cask whisky?

No, Girvan Proof Strength is not a single cask whisky.

Is Girvan Proof Strength a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Girvan Proof Strength is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Girvan Proof Strength suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Girvan Proof Strength is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Girvan Proof Strength might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Girvan Proof Strength een goede keuze voor mij?

This Girvan Proof Strength can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a fruity character. Indeed, this fruitiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Girvan Proof Strength a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Girvan Proof Strength whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Girvan Proof Strength a spicy whisky?

No, in the flavour profile of this Girvan Proof Strength whisky there is very little to no significant spiciness at all.

Is Girvan Proof Strength a fruity whisky?

Yes, Girvan Proof Strength is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Girvan Proof Strength pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Girvan Proof Strength whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Girvan Proof Strength have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Girvan Proof Strength an independent bottling?

No, Girvan Proof Strength is an official bottling of Girvan.

Is Girvan Proof Strength suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Girvan Proof Strength is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Girvan Proof Strength vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Girvan Proof Strength a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Girvan Proof Strength whisky from Girvan is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
