Flavour notes

The aroma opens with smouldering campfire embers and sweet smoked bacon, then moves into plum skin, dark cherries and a touch of cocoa.

On the palate it feels thick and oily, with blackberries and juicy red fruit set against a pinch of sea salt and strongly toasted oak. The finish keeps the smoke and barbecue meat in view, followed by redcurrant jelly, dark chocolate and ripe cherries.

Product info about Ledaig 2015 10y

Ledaig 2015 10y shows how compelling the meeting of peat smoke and wine cask influence can be. This single malt from the island of Mull belongs to Douglas Laing's Old Particular Wine Cask Collection, a series built around single casks finished in wine casks. Here, a Tawny Port Wine Cask finish brings a darker fruit accent to Ledaig's smoky island style.

Distilled in 2015 and bottled in 2025 after 10 years, it comes from one individual cask only. With an outturn of 342 bottles, this is less about a broad distillery profile and more about one specific cask speaking clearly: smoke, fruit, spice and a subtle saline edge.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, bottlings like this are valued because they give whisky drinkers a more focused view of a familiar name. Bottled at 48.4% ABV, without colouring and without chill filtration, it keeps close to the whisky's cask-driven personality while preserving the weight and texture that make this release so engaging.

About LEDAIG

Ledaig is a Scottish single malt whisky that originates from the Isle of Mull, off the west coast of Scotland. This whisky is produced by the Tobermory Distillery, which has been located on the edge of the eponymous harbor town of Tobermory since 1798. Within the distillery's range, Ledaig specifically stands for the peated, smoky style whisky, in contrast to the much softer Tobermory bottlings. The name Ledaig, pronounced led-chig, means safe harbor in Gaelic and refers to Mull's historical past as an important maritime trading place. The production of Ledaig has a turbulent history: the distillery has been closed and reopened several times, which is typical for many Scottish distilleries with a long tradition. Nowadays, Ledaig impresses with a distinctive, smoky and maritime character, which is loved by fans of robust island malts. The range includes various ages, often matured in ex-bourbon casks, where the spicy peat smoke is beautifully interwoven with salty and slightly fruity notes. Ledaig is recognized worldwide as an authentic example of a peated island whisky with a unique personality, without any pretensions.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Ledaig 2015 10y?

Ledaig 2015 10y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ledaig 2015 10y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ledaig 2015 10y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Ledaig 2015 10y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Ledaig 2015 10y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ledaig 2015 10y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ledaig 2015 10y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ledaig 2015 10y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Ledaig 2015 10y is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Ledaig 2015 10y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ledaig 2015 10y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Ledaig 2015 10y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Ledaig 2015 10y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ledaig 2015 10y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ledaig 2015 10y have a high alcohol content?

Ledaig 2015 10y is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y an independent bottling?

Ledaig 2015 10y is a whisky of the Ledaig brand bottled by the independent bottler Douglas Laing. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ledaig 2015 10y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ledaig 2015 10y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ledaig 2015 10y whisky from Ledaig is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
