Flavour notes

The aroma opens with soft malt, dried apricots, orange peel and toasted almonds. On the palate, walnuts, honey, ginger and stone fruit give it more weight, with clear spice and wood influence framing the fruit rather than hiding it.

The finish lingers on spice and fresh orange. At natural cask strength it has real presence, while the flavour line remains focused on malt, nuts, citrus and warm ginger spice.

Product info about The Gauldrons Eclipse

The Gauldrons Eclipse is a Campbeltown blended malt with a distinctly different angle. Douglas Laing created it from Single Cask Single Malts from Campbeltown, then gave the whisky a finish in orange wine casks from the cellars of Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia. It keeps its Scottish malt identity, while adding a cask influence that immediately gives the release its own place.

Bottled at natural cask strength, 52.9% ABV, it is presented without chill filtration or added colouring. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we value for the way it brings together origin, cask choice and a limited release format without feeling routine.

Only 3000 bottles are available. The gold foil details and neck label with a QR code for an interactive tasting make it clear that The Gauldrons Eclipse was conceived as a special edition rather than a regular expression.

About BIG PEAT

Big Peat is a Scottish blended malt whisky that is entirely aimed at enthusiasts of smoky, peated flavors. The brand was créëted by Douglas Laing & Co, a family business that has been active as an independent bottler since 1948. Big Peat is composed of single malts from various distilleries on the island of Islay, generally including whiskies from Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore, and sometimes the rarer Port Ellen. This results in a distinctive island character, characterized by robust peat smoke, maritime influences, and earthy notes. Since its introduction in 2009, Big Peat has built up a loyal following and is regularly released in limited editions, such as special bottlings for Christmas and various collectibles. Big Peat is not chill-filtered and not colored, which keeps the whisky as pure as possible in the bottle. Over the years, the brand has won several international awards, further increasing its appeal for fans of powerful Islay whiskies.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is The Gauldrons Eclipse?

The Gauldrons Eclipse is a blended malt whisky .

Blended malt whisky is a blend of exclusively malt whiskies sourced from different distilleries. The major difference from "regular" blended whisky is that blended malts do not use grain whisky.

Although not common, Compass Box's trendy Blended Malt Whiskies might ring a bell. They do not call themselves "blenders", but "whiskymakers" and they select the best whiskies from the best distilleries for their unique blends.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, The Gauldrons Eclipse is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse a single cask whisky?

No, The Gauldrons Eclipse is not a single cask whisky.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, The Gauldrons Eclipse is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse suitable to give as a gift?

Although this The Gauldrons Eclipse is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one The Gauldrons Eclipse might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse een goede keuze voor mij?

This The Gauldrons Eclipse can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but The Gauldrons Eclipse is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse a spicy whisky?

Yes, The Gauldrons Eclipse is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is The Gauldrons Eclipse a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but The Gauldrons Eclipse is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink The Gauldrons Eclipse pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this The Gauldrons Eclipse whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does The Gauldrons Eclipse have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse an independent bottling?

The Gauldrons Eclipse is a whisky of the Big Peat brand bottled by the independent bottler Douglas Laing. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This The Gauldrons Eclipse is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is The Gauldrons Eclipse a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this The Gauldrons Eclipse whisky from Big Peat is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
