Flavour notes

The colour is a rich ruby amber. Aromatically it opens with caramelised fruit and hazelnuts, followed by a touch of salted caramel and the citrus bite of grapefruit peel.

On the palate it is full-bodied and layered. Oak comes forward first, then dark red berries and creamy vanilla take over, with ginger, sweet spice and aniseed adding detail. The finish is long and flavourful, leaving vanilla, roasted oak and a pleasant sweetness behind.

Product info about Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery

Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is the third release in Arran's Signature Series, and it has a very clear identity of its own. This 12-year-old single malt from the Isle of Arran was selected and signed by master distiller Stewart Bowman, giving the release a more personal feel than a standard expression.

The maturation story is central here. The whisky first spent 6 years in bourbon casks before gaining its final character in Spanish red wine casks in warehouse #4. That explains the combination of creamy vanilla, darker berry fruit and a long spiced edge running through the whisky.

With 15,049 bottles produced and the final bottles now in circulation, this release has a distinctive place in the Drankenshop Broekmans selection. At 50% ABV, it has enough structure to carry its fruit, spice and oak influence with confidence, while still keeping the focus on flavour rather than sheer strength.

About ARRAN

Arran Whisky is made at the still fairly young Lochranza Distillery. The first plans for it were made in 1993 and the first alcohol ran out of the stills there in 1995. That means they will celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2025, hopefully resulting in a nice 30yo? Stay tuned for that news!

Lochranza Distillery can be found in the village of the same name in the north of the Isle of Arran. That's on the west coast of Scotland, a stone's throw from Glasgow. It's a popular weekend trip from Glasgow, because on Arran you'll find a sort of miniature version of Scotland. A short distance away (the road around the whole island is about 80 km in total) you'll find mountains, valleys, beautiful green meadows, beautiful beaches and everything that makes Scotland so enticing for foodies: fresh produce from the land and sea, and whisky, of course. The distillery's location among the mountains in the north of the island is unquestionably spectacular. So must have thought the eagles who were already living there when the distillery was built. They have since become part of the identity of Arran whisky and you can observe them on site to your heart's content.

The whisky made by Lochranza is much loved. It is characterised by a distinctly fruity character that appeals to novice tasters and experienced whisky lovers alike. The basic range includes whiskies that can now be called modern classics such as the 10yo, the Quarter Cask and the Sherry Cask. All of them are tasty, accessible and affordable whiskies of high quality, carefully blended from the casks aged in their warehouses. The Machrie Moor, the lightly peated version made at Lochranza, is also a favourite of many, but will no longer be produced from 2026, as the group has set up a second distillery in the south of the island making only peated whisky (Lagg Distillery).

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery?

Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery a single cask whisky?

No, Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is not a single cask whisky.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery a whisky at cask strength?

No, Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery een goede keuze voor mij?

This Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery a spicy whisky?

Yes, Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery a fruity whisky?

Yes, Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery have a high alcohol content?

Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery an independent bottling?

No, Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is an official bottling of Arran.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Arran Signature #3 12y Duero Discovery a biological whisky?

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
