Our buying advice for Benrinnes 12y Macb

The Benrinnes 12y Macb is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who appreciate the finer single malt whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Speyside and was bottled at 53.5%. Ideal for those who already have some experience with whisky and are ready for something fruitier and more complex. Perfect to enjoy after a long day, or to give as a surprising gift. The price of this single malt whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality more than justify this.

Flavour notes

The nose gives an immediate sense of force, with trampled grass and muddy earth setting a rugged, grounded tone.

On the palate it is meaty and oily, broad in texture and firmly present. Layers of blackcurrant bring a darker fruit note, while spicy oregano adds a savoury edge. The finish lingers, keeping that alert, ready-for-action feeling right to the end.

Product info about Benrinnes 12y Macb

Benrinnes 12y Macb is part of Elixir Distillers' Macbeth Collection, a set of 42 Scotch whiskies each named after a character from Shakespeare's tragedy. This Benrinnes takes the role of Soldier, one of the household characters, and the whisky has been chosen to match that image: firm, powerful and full of presence.

The Speyside origin is central to the story. The collection refers to Ben Rinnes, the landmark hill visible across the region, with the distillery located at its foot. Twelve years of maturation in refill sherry butts underline the whisky's meaty, solid structure while keeping the character direct and expressive.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Speyside single malt for drinkers who want more than gentle fruit alone. Bottled at 53.5% ABV in an edition of 2400 bottles, and now down to the last bottles, this Soldier feels appropriately bold and finite.

About BENRINNES

Benrinnes is a traditional Speyside distillery with a rather eventful history. The initial distillery Lyne of Ruthrie from 1826 was destroyed by a flood. Afterwards it was rebuilt a few kilometers further away. After several bankruptcies and a serious fire, the distillery was thoroughly renewed in 1955. Among other things, 3 pot stills were added, bringing the total to 6. Some time later, they even switched to a unique process involving partial triple distillation using their two wash stills and four spirit stills. In 2007, they switched back to traditional double distillation.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Benrinnes 12y Macb?

Benrinnes 12y Macb is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Benrinnes 12y Macb is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb a single cask whisky?

No, Benrinnes 12y Macb is not a single cask whisky.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb a whisky at cask strength?

No, Benrinnes 12y Macb is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Benrinnes 12y Macb is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Benrinnes 12y Macb might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb een goede keuze voor mij?

This Benrinnes 12y Macb can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a fruity character. Indeed, this fruitiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Benrinnes 12y Macb whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Benrinnes 12y Macb is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Benrinnes 12y Macb a fruity whisky?

Yes, Benrinnes 12y Macb is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Benrinnes 12y Macb pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Benrinnes 12y Macb whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Benrinnes 12y Macb have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb an independent bottling?

Benrinnes 12y Macb is a whisky of the Benrinnes brand bottled by the independent bottler Elixir Distillers. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Benrinnes 12y Macb is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Benrinnes 12y Macb a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Benrinnes 12y Macb whisky from Benrinnes is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
