Flavour notes

The aroma opens with a clear burst of spice, followed by tropical sweetness. It feels fruit-driven and spicy rather than smoky.

On the palate, ginger and nutmeg take the lead, softened by milk chocolate. The finish brings a striking raspberry note, leaving the Amarone influence lingering in a very recognisable way.

Product info about The Epicurean Amarone

The Epicurean Amarone is a good example of what makes Douglas Laing's Regional Malts range so engaging. These blended malts are built around the character of Scotland's whisky regions, and The Epicurean stands for the lighter, more playful Lowland side of the family.

For this limited Amarone release, that Lowland style is given an extra touch of depth through a finish in ex-Amarone wine casks. The result stays true to The Epicurean's elegant nature, while bringing more fruit and spice into the foreground. Bottling at 48% gives the whisky enough structure to carry that wine cask influence clearly.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we like to present when someone wants a Scottish blended malt with a recognisable regional identity, but also a slightly more distinctive twist. With the final bottles now in circulation, it has the feel of a release worth discovering while it is still there.

About BIG PEAT

Big Peat is a Scottish blended malt whisky that is entirely aimed at enthusiasts of smoky, peated flavors. The brand was créëted by Douglas Laing & Co, a family business that has been active as an independent bottler since 1948. Big Peat is composed of single malts from various distilleries on the island of Islay, generally including whiskies from Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore, and sometimes the rarer Port Ellen. This results in a distinctive island character, characterized by robust peat smoke, maritime influences, and earthy notes. Since its introduction in 2009, Big Peat has built up a loyal following and is regularly released in limited editions, such as special bottlings for Christmas and various collectibles. Big Peat is not chill-filtered and not colored, which keeps the whisky as pure as possible in the bottle. Over the years, the brand has won several international awards, further increasing its appeal for fans of powerful Islay whiskies.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is The Epicurean Amarone?

The Epicurean Amarone is a blended malt whisky .

Blended malt whisky is a blend of exclusively malt whiskies sourced from different distilleries. The major difference from "regular" blended whisky is that blended malts do not use grain whisky.

Although not common, Compass Box's trendy Blended Malt Whiskies might ring a bell. They do not call themselves "blenders", but "whiskymakers" and they select the best whiskies from the best distilleries for their unique blends.

Is The Epicurean Amarone a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, The Epicurean Amarone is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is The Epicurean Amarone a single cask whisky?

Yes, The Epicurean Amarone is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is The Epicurean Amarone a whisky at cask strength?

No, The Epicurean Amarone is not whisky at cask strength.

Is The Epicurean Amarone suitable to give as a gift?

Although this The Epicurean Amarone is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one The Epicurean Amarone might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is The Epicurean Amarone een goede keuze voor mij?

This The Epicurean Amarone can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is The Epicurean Amarone a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this The Epicurean Amarone whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is The Epicurean Amarone a spicy whisky?

Yes, The Epicurean Amarone is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is The Epicurean Amarone a fruity whisky?

Yes, The Epicurean Amarone is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink The Epicurean Amarone pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this The Epicurean Amarone whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does The Epicurean Amarone have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this The Epicurean Amarone is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is The Epicurean Amarone an independent bottling?

The Epicurean Amarone is a whisky of the Big Peat brand bottled by the independent bottler Douglas Laing. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is The Epicurean Amarone suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This The Epicurean Amarone is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is The Epicurean Amarone vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is The Epicurean Amarone a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this The Epicurean Amarone whisky from Big Peat is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
