Flavour notes

The aroma is warm and dessert-like, with toasted hazelnuts, Swiss chocolate, orange marmalade and butterscotch sauce.

On the palate, the texture is strikingly luxurious, almost like high-quality olive oil, carrying flavours of fresh buttered popcorn, syrup tart and crisp pastry with delicate crème anglaise. The finish keeps that rich sweet creaminess in place, while a subtle citrus note gradually develops.

Product info about Benrinnes 2002 20y

Benrinnes 2002 20y is a Speyside single malt distilled in 2002 and bottled in 2022 after twenty years of maturation. Released by The Single Malts of Scotland as part of the Whisky Trail series, it feels very much like a whisky chosen for the individuality of its cask.

The whisky was drawn from a single hogshead, so the focus is on one specific maturation rather than a broader vatting. With 527 bottles produced and only the last bottles remaining, there is a natural sense of scarcity here, but the real interest lies in tasting a mature Benrinnes shaped by one cask over two decades.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we appreciate releases like this because they give whisky drinkers something precise to explore. The profile moves through warm sweetness, nutty richness and clear spice, carried by a robust 54.6% strength that gives the whisky presence without needing a louder story.

About BENRINNES

Benrinnes is a traditional Speyside distillery with a rather eventful history. The initial distillery Lyne of Ruthrie from 1826 was destroyed by a flood. Afterwards it was rebuilt a few kilometers further away. After several bankruptcies and a serious fire, the distillery was thoroughly renewed in 1955. Among other things, 3 pot stills were added, bringing the total to 6. Some time later, they even switched to a unique process involving partial triple distillation using their two wash stills and four spirit stills. In 2007, they switched back to traditional double distillation.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Benrinnes 2002 20y?

Benrinnes 2002 20y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Benrinnes 2002 20y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Benrinnes 2002 20y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Benrinnes 2002 20y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Benrinnes 2002 20y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Benrinnes 2002 20y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Benrinnes 2002 20y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Benrinnes 2002 20y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Benrinnes 2002 20y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Benrinnes 2002 20y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Benrinnes 2002 20y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Benrinnes 2002 20y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Benrinnes 2002 20y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Benrinnes 2002 20y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y an independent bottling?

Benrinnes 2002 20y is a whisky of the Benrinnes brand bottled by the independent bottler The Single Malts of Scotland. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Benrinnes 2002 20y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Benrinnes 2002 20y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Benrinnes 2002 20y whisky from Benrinnes is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
