Flavour notes

The nose opens with restrained oak before moving into abundant citrus. A light touch of white pepper adds lift, followed by elegant notes of vanilla and white fruit.

On the palate it feels lightly prickling and creamy. The oak becomes more present here, though it does not take over. Pleasant spice and roasted fruit shape the middle, while the finish brings farm honey, vanilla and a final return of well-placed oak.

Product info about Teaninich 2011 12y

Teaninich 2011 12y is a Highland single malt with a very defined identity: distilled in 2011, bottled in 2023 and drawn from a single cask. Rather than a broad house-style release, it captures one particular twelve-year maturation in French oak.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we like to present when someone is looking for a whisky with a clear cask story. Only 633 bottles were filled, and with the last bottles now available, its appeal lies in that finite, one-cask nature as much as in the flavour itself.

The character is led by spice, supported by citrus, white fruit and a measured touch of oak. At 51.5% alcohol it has presence, yet the tasting profile stays away from peat or coastal salinity. The result is a Highland malt with energy, creamy texture and a polished French oak influence.

About TEANINICH

Teaninich is one of the distilleries from the Diageo portfolio. In the 1970s, this was one of the largest distilleries they operated at the time (then still under the name DCL). And yet, Teaninich as a brand is not well known to the general public. That is of course because mainly spirit is produced here that is intended for the house blends. And a lot is produced: the capacity is more than 10 million liters per year! Teaninich also uses a very unique method that actually comes from the beer world. Simply put, they grind their malt very finely to a kind of flour without the husks and then filter after mashing. This way, they can get a much higher yield from the malt.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Teaninich 2011 12y?

Teaninich 2011 12y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Teaninich 2011 12y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Teaninich 2011 12y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Teaninich 2011 12y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Teaninich 2011 12y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Teaninich 2011 12y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Teaninich 2011 12y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Teaninich 2011 12y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Teaninich 2011 12y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Teaninich 2011 12y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Teaninich 2011 12y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Teaninich 2011 12y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Teaninich 2011 12y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Teaninich 2011 12y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Teaninich 2011 12y have a high alcohol content?

Teaninich 2011 12y is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y an independent bottling?

Teaninich 2011 12y is a whisky of the Teaninich brand bottled by the independent bottler Asta Morris. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Teaninich 2011 12y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Teaninich 2011 12y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Teaninich 2011 12y whisky from Teaninich is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
