This whisky comes from the Scottish Highland and was bottled at a cask strength of no less than 50.9%. This powerful and intensely fruity whisky requires a developed palate. Product info about Glendronach 1991 31y#1106

Glendronach 1991 31y #1106 is a Highland single malt with a very clear identity. It was distilled on 22 November 1991 and bottled in 2023, after 31 years in a single ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon.

That cask choice is central to the whisky's story. The supplied profile points to a deep sherried style, with plum, chocolate, raisins, ginger and tobacco running through the experience. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Glendronach we would introduce to someone looking for mature sherry-cask character with dark fruit, spice and a more sensual side.

Bottled at cask strength, 50.9%, it keeps close to the power of the original cask. Only 667 bottles came from cask 1106, making this a very specific expression of one long-aged whisky. With the last bottles now indicated, it stands out as a particularly finite release within this style.

The nose brings ripe plum, cocoa and aromatic tobacco leaves together with sultana and ginger. It feels dark and fruit-led, with spice and sherry depth giving it extra weight.

On the palate, plums and dates take the lead. The finish moves into blackberry chocolate and sweet tobacco, leaving a warm, lingering impression.

About GLENDRONACH

Glendronach literally means, in Gaelic, 'Valley of Blackberries'. A fairy-tale name for a distillery with a lot of history, a special aura and, above all, memorable whisky. Glendronach was founded in 1826 by James Allardice. Today, it is known as one of the leading producers of Scotch whisky matured in sherry casks. Glendronach was closed for a while between 1996 and 2002 and things were not looking good for its future. A series of acquisitions saw it join a group that also included Benriach and Glenglassaugh, led by Billy Walker. That revived the brand and built it into a crowd favourite, with legendary bottlings. In 2016, the group came into the hands of Brown Forman, the US company that also heads Jack Daniel's and Woodford's bourbons, among others. This promises a bright future for the three single malt distilleries, which will have a strong partner for more growth globally.

Glendronach's main focus, however, remains the creation of beautiful whiskies. The hand of Rachel Barrie, the new master blender, is clear. With great expertise, she selects the casks used to compose Glendronach's base range and manages to keep quality high year after year. Work is also currently underway to significantly expand production capacity to produce even more quality spirit in the future.

Flagship on offer is the 12yo, aged exclusively in a combination of oloroso and PX sherry casks. Then there are also the 15yo, the 18yo and the 21yo to discover, and regularly limited official bottlings such as the Cask Strength and the Grandeur.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106?

Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 a single cask whisky?

Yes, Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 a spicy whisky?

Yes, Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 a fruity whisky?

Yes, Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is a whisky with an intensely fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruits and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 have a high alcohol content?

Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 an independent bottling?

No, Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is an official bottling of Glendronach.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Glendronach 1991 31y#1106 whisky from Glendronach is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
