Flavour notes

The aroma opens with farmyard notes, rye dough, spiced vanilla and popcorn. It feels direct and individual, with the rye grain sitting firmly at the centre of the glass.

On the palate, burnt sugar and salted caramel come first, moving into rye beer, biscuits and clove. The spice lingers for a long time on the finish, supported by a clear sense of wood and warm seasoning.

Product info about Belgrove 2016 #170216

Belgrove 2016 #170216 is the kind of rye whisky that immediately gives you something to talk about. This Tasmanian single cask bottling was selected for Collective#1 by Berry Bros. & Rudd, the British independent bottler bringing together spirits from around the world with a shared willingness to challenge convention and reduce their impact on natural resources.

The story at Belgrove Distillery is especially hands-on. Pete Bignell grows his own rye, built his own stills and fires them with used cooking oil. According to the supplied information, the distillery operates almost as a closed loop, with bio-oil as the only outside input and whisky as the only output. That gives this rye a very distinctive identity before you even pour a glass.

Cask #170216 was filled in 2016 and bottled in 2023 at 7 years old. It was released at cask strength, 61.1% ABV, with just 256 bottles drawn from the cask. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is a bottle we would point out to someone interested in small-scale whisky with a clear sense of origin, a strong production story and the direct character of one individual cask.

About BELGROVE

Belgrove Distillery is one of the rare distilleries that produces all its own grains, carries out the malting process itself, and then ferments, distills and matures on the same location. That location is Tasmania, the imaginative island south of Australia, a very remote place. Belgrove is the brainchild of Peter Bignell. Their whiskys are made using rye and the farm and distillery are powered entirely by biodiesel.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Belgrove 2016 #170216?

Belgrove 2016 #170216 is a rye whisky .

Rye Whiskey, on the other hand, has rye as its main ingredient, with the legal minimum proportion of rye being 51%. The vast majority of this whiskey comes from Kentucky, United States.

You can compare the use of grains in American whiskey to the taste they have when you bake bread from them. Rye gives a tough, robust and full-bodied flavour.

Maturing in new oak barrels softens the sharpness of the whiskey, but fortunately an edge is always retained. Highly recommended straight from Kentucky is Michter's Rye Whiskey. Another very tasty rye whiskey is Templeton Rye Whiskey.

Wheat whiskey follows the same story, but in this case rye is replaced by wheat. Wheat creates a very smooth, easily digestible whiskey that still comes with some body.

Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Belgrove 2016 #170216 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 a single cask whisky?

Yes, Belgrove 2016 #170216 is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Belgrove 2016 #170216 is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Belgrove 2016 #170216 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Belgrove 2016 #170216 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Belgrove 2016 #170216 can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Belgrove 2016 #170216 whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 a spicy whisky?

Yes, Belgrove 2016 #170216 is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Belgrove 2016 #170216 is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Belgrove 2016 #170216 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Belgrove 2016 #170216 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Belgrove 2016 #170216 have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 an independent bottling?

Belgrove 2016 #170216 is a whisky of the Belgrove brand bottled by the independent bottler Berry Bros. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Belgrove 2016 #170216 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Belgrove 2016 #170216 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Australia it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.
