Flavour notes

The aroma brings sweet sherry-like notes together with dried fruit, followed by vanilla, a hint of coffee and dark chocolate. On the palate it is juicy and mouth-watering, with rich toffee, syrup, cocoa and vanilla at the front.

A fruit-driven sweetness then rounds out the experience, with autumn fruit and honey leading into a warm, gentle finish. The vanilla fades softly, leaving a final touch of caramel.

Product info about Wolfburn Christmas

Wolfburn Christmas is a limited Highland single malt created to mark the 2023 Christmas season. It is built around Wolfburn's naturally soft, sweet spirit, matured for a little over eight years and brought together from two cask types: Oloroso sherry hogsheads and first-fill bourbon casks.

The result sits firmly in a festive, generous style, with fruit and spice taking the lead and no peat shaping the profile. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of seasonal release we like because the Christmas theme is supported by what is actually in the glass: warmth, sweetness and cask-driven depth.

Only 1,800 bottles were released in total, so this is not a regular core-range expression. It feels tied to a particular moment, made for opening during the darker months when a richer, fruit-led single malt makes complete sense.

About WOLFBURN

Way up in the far north of the Scottish mainland, on the shores overlooking the Orkney Islands, you will find Wolfburn Distillery. It has only been there since 2013, but in the meantime it has already stolen the hearts of many a whisky lover. They do this through an uncomplicated approach and a focus on quality spirit aged in good casks. It is a fairly small distillery, with an annual capacity of just 135,000 litres. When it was founded, it was the most northerly distillery on the mainland, but in the meantime there are two more (smaller) distilleries just a little further north, with 8 Doors and North Point). Wolfburn doesn't really need that title though, the whisky speaks for itself.

At Wolfburn, they work with a small mashtun (1.1 tonnes) and four washbacks, in which fermentation takes between 70-92 hours. The copper stills have a capacity of 5,500 litres (wash still) and 3,600 litres (spirit still) respectively. Untasted whisky is mainly made at Wolfburn, although small amounts of tarted malt are also experimented with. A major milestone for the distillery was the launch of their very first whisky with an age statement for the standard range: the 10yo, launched in 2023, was met with good response from tasters around the world.

In addition to the 10yo, Wolfburn's base range includes a diverse range of flavour profiles, including the Northland (American oak, quarter casks), Aurora (bourbon and sherry casks) and the Morven (with a slight hint of peat). The consistently high quality of this base range is striking, and there are also a number of limited bottlings every year, which are also always worth discovering.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Wolfburn Christmas?

Wolfburn Christmas is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Wolfburn Christmas a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Wolfburn Christmas is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Wolfburn Christmas a single cask whisky?

No, Wolfburn Christmas is not a single cask whisky.

Is Wolfburn Christmas a whisky at cask strength?

No, Wolfburn Christmas is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Wolfburn Christmas suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Wolfburn Christmas is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Wolfburn Christmas might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Wolfburn Christmas een goede keuze voor mij?

This Wolfburn Christmas can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Wolfburn Christmas a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Wolfburn Christmas whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Wolfburn Christmas a spicy whisky?

Yes, Wolfburn Christmas is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Wolfburn Christmas a fruity whisky?

Yes, Wolfburn Christmas is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Wolfburn Christmas pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Wolfburn Christmas whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Wolfburn Christmas have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Wolfburn Christmas is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Wolfburn Christmas an independent bottling?

No, Wolfburn Christmas is an official bottling of Wolfburn.

Is Wolfburn Christmas suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Wolfburn Christmas is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Wolfburn Christmas vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Wolfburn Christmas a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Wolfburn Christmas whisky from Wolfburn is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
