Product info about Tobermory 1994 20y

Tobermory 1994 20y is a Scottish single malt from Mull with a very focused identity: one individual cask, twenty years of maturation and bottling at cask strength. Rather than a broad house-style release, it is a snapshot of one Oak Cask from Tobermory.

The whisky was bottled by The Whisky Agency as part of the Liquid Sun series. That independent bottling context matters here, because the emphasis is on the character of a specific cask rather than on a larger vatting designed for consistency.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, releases like this are selected for customers who enjoy whiskies with a clear origin and a defined bottling story. At 48.5%, it keeps close to its natural cask strength, and the indication that only the last bottles remain adds to the sense of a finite, time-bound release.

This Tobermory is bottled at 48.5% cask strength, keeping it close to the cask from which it was drawn. The available details confirm an Oak Cask and twenty years of maturation, but no official tasting notes are provided for specific aromas, flavours or finish.

For that reason, the tasting description remains deliberately restrained: a single cask single malt best approached as the direct presentation of one individual cask.

About TOBERMORY

Tobermory is a Scottish whisky that originates from the island of Mull, on the west coast of Scotland. The distillery, which was founded in 1798, is one of the oldest still active distilleries in the country and is known as the only active distillery on Mull. Tobermory produces both an unpeated single malt (which is usually bottled under the name Tobermory) and a peated variant that is marketed under the name Ledaig. The production facility operates with relatively small quantities, ensuring that the whisky remains authentic and full of character. At Tobermory, it is customary for the whisky to mature for at least ten years, resulting in a distinctive soft and fruity profile with a subtle maritime influence. Over the years, the distillery has had several owners, but it is currently managed by Distell Group Limited. With a rich history, a unique island character and a varied portfolio, Tobermory has secured its own place within the world of Scottish single malts.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Tobermory 1994 20y?

Tobermory 1994 20y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Tobermory 1994 20y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Tobermory 1994 20y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Tobermory 1994 20y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Tobermory 1994 20y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Tobermory 1994 20y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Tobermory 1994 20y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Tobermory 1994 20y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Tobermory 1994 20y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Tobermory 1994 20y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Do you drink Tobermory 1994 20y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Tobermory 1994 20y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Tobermory 1994 20y have a high alcohol content?

Tobermory 1994 20y is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Tobermory 1994 20y an independent bottling?

Tobermory 1994 20y is a whisky of the Tobermory brand bottled by the independent bottler The Whisky Agency. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Tobermory 1994 20y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Tobermory 1994 20y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Tobermory 1994 20y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Tobermory 1994 20y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Tobermory 1994 20y whisky from Tobermory is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
