Product info about Ledaig 2005 17y

Ledaig 2005 17y is a Scottish single malt from Mull with a very focused identity: distilled on 3 February 2005 and bottled on 7 April 2022 from a single bourbon barrel. After 17 years of maturation, that cask produced just 253 bottles, making this a small-scale release rather than a widely available expression.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this bottling stands out for the way several elements come together naturally: single cask origin, cask strength at 54.2%, and a limited outturn. The bourbon barrel influence is indicated as relatively light, so the whisky's profile is not built around heavy wood. Peat is the clearest feature, supported by more restrained notes of fruit, spice, salt and oak.

For drinkers who appreciate peated single malt with a more individual cask-driven story, this Ledaig has a clear appeal. With the last bottles now indicated, it also carries the quiet urgency that often comes with small single cask releases.

The stated flavour profile places peat as the leading element. Wood, spice, fruit and a salty touch are present in a lighter role, adding shape around the peated core rather than taking over.

Bottled at 54.2% cask strength, this Ledaig sits in a powerful, concentrated style. The bourbon barrel influence is shown as supportive and relatively restrained.

About LEDAIG

Ledaig is a Scottish single malt whisky that originates from the Isle of Mull, off the west coast of Scotland. This whisky is produced by the Tobermory Distillery, which has been located on the edge of the eponymous harbor town of Tobermory since 1798. Within the distillery's range, Ledaig specifically stands for the peated, smoky style whisky, in contrast to the much softer Tobermory bottlings. The name Ledaig, pronounced led-chig, means safe harbor in Gaelic and refers to Mull's historical past as an important maritime trading place. The production of Ledaig has a turbulent history: the distillery has been closed and reopened several times, which is typical for many Scottish distilleries with a long tradition. Nowadays, Ledaig impresses with a distinctive, smoky and maritime character, which is loved by fans of robust island malts. The range includes various ages, often matured in ex-bourbon casks, where the spicy peat smoke is beautifully interwoven with salty and slightly fruity notes. Ledaig is recognized worldwide as an authentic example of a peated island whisky with a unique personality, without any pretensions.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Ledaig 2005 17y?

Ledaig 2005 17y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ledaig 2005 17y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ledaig 2005 17y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Ledaig 2005 17y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Ledaig 2005 17y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ledaig 2005 17y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ledaig 2005 17y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ledaig 2005 17y can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a smoky character. Indeed, the peat flavour is quite prominent in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this peatiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y a tarred whisky?

Yes, Ledaig 2005 17y is a whisky with a reasonably peated flavour profile: the smokiness of this whisky will be unmistakable with every sip. However, it is more moderate than in the most intensely peated whisky.

Peaty, smoky or peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Ledaig 2005 17y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ledaig 2005 17y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Ledaig 2005 17y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Ledaig 2005 17y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ledaig 2005 17y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ledaig 2005 17y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y an independent bottling?

Ledaig 2005 17y is a whisky of the Ledaig brand bottled by the independent bottler The Single Malts of Scotland. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ledaig 2005 17y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ledaig 2005 17y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ledaig 2005 17y whisky from Ledaig is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
