Flavour notes

The flavour profile is led by clear fruitiness and spice. Lighter wood influence and a gentle floral note sit underneath, while peat and salinity do not define the whisky.

Product info about Teaninich 2007 14y

Teaninich 2007 14y is a Highland single malt with the kind of narrow focus that makes independent bottlings so engaging. Distilled on 28 September 2007 and bottled on 21 February 2022 by Elixir Distillers for the Whisky Trail series, it was drawn from a single hogshead and released at cask strength. Rather than presenting a house style blended across many casks, it captures one individual cask at one specific point in its maturation.

Only 260 bottles were produced, and these are marked as the last bottles with us. In the whisky range at Drankenshop Broekmans, this Teaninich sits in that appealing corner where limited availability, independent selection and cask-driven character come together without unnecessary decoration.

The profile points towards fruit and spice as the main themes, with lighter wood and floral touches in support. Peat and salinity are not part of the main picture here. At 56.6% alcohol, it keeps the directness and strength associated with a cask strength single cask release.

The flavour profile is led by clear fruitiness and spice. Lighter wood influence and a gentle floral note sit underneath, while peat and salinity do not define the whisky.

Bottled at cask strength, it presents itself in a firm, direct style, with the focus on fruit, spice and the restrained but noticeable contribution of the hogshead.

About TEANINICH

Teaninich is one of the distilleries from the Diageo portfolio. In the 1970s, this was one of the largest distilleries they operated at the time (then still under the name DCL). And yet, Teaninich as a brand is not well known to the general public. That is of course because mainly spirit is produced here that is intended for the house blends. And a lot is produced: the capacity is more than 10 million liters per year! Teaninich also uses a very unique method that actually comes from the beer world. Simply put, they grind their malt very finely to a kind of flour without the husks and then filter after mashing. This way, they can get a much higher yield from the malt.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Teaninich 2007 14y?

Teaninich 2007 14y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Teaninich 2007 14y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Teaninich 2007 14y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Teaninich 2007 14y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Teaninich 2007 14y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Teaninich 2007 14y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Teaninich 2007 14y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Teaninich 2007 14y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Teaninich 2007 14y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Teaninich 2007 14y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Teaninich 2007 14y a fruity whisky?

Yes, Teaninich 2007 14y is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Teaninich 2007 14y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Teaninich 2007 14y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Teaninich 2007 14y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y an independent bottling?

Teaninich 2007 14y is a whisky of the Teaninich brand bottled by the independent bottler Elixir Distillers. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Teaninich 2007 14y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Teaninich 2007 14y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Teaninich 2007 14y whisky from Teaninich is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
