Flavour notes

No detailed aroma or flavour notes are supplied for this Ledaig, so it would not be right to add specific tasting descriptors that are not documented. What is clear is the format: a single cask whisky bottled at 58.2%, placing the emphasis on concentration, natural strength and the direct voice of one cask.

It is the kind of whisky to approach slowly. A few drops of water can be useful if desired, giving this 24-year-old bottling time and space to reveal itself in the glass.

Product info about Ledaig 1997 24y Barc

Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is a Scottish single malt from Mull, bottled by Blackadder as part of the Statement series. With a 1997 distillation date, 24 years of age and a strength of 58.2%, it immediately presents itself as a more specialist release rather than an everyday bottling.

Its appeal lies in the combination of single cask origin and cask strength presentation. This is not a broad batch shaped towards consistency, but one individual cask captured after long maturation, with its own specific identity left intact.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, bottles like this are valued for exactly that reason: they offer a narrow, limited view of a distillery at a particular point in time. With only the last bottles remaining, the availability of this release has become notably tight.

About LEDAIG

Ledaig is a Scottish single malt whisky that originates from the Isle of Mull, off the west coast of Scotland. This whisky is produced by the Tobermory Distillery, which has been located on the edge of the eponymous harbor town of Tobermory since 1798. Within the distillery's range, Ledaig specifically stands for the peated, smoky style whisky, in contrast to the much softer Tobermory bottlings. The name Ledaig, pronounced led-chig, means safe harbor in Gaelic and refers to Mull's historical past as an important maritime trading place. The production of Ledaig has a turbulent history: the distillery has been closed and reopened several times, which is typical for many Scottish distilleries with a long tradition. Nowadays, Ledaig impresses with a distinctive, smoky and maritime character, which is loved by fans of robust island malts. The range includes various ages, often matured in ex-bourbon casks, where the spicy peat smoke is beautifully interwoven with salty and slightly fruity notes. Ledaig is recognized worldwide as an authentic example of a peated island whisky with a unique personality, without any pretensions.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc?

Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc a single cask whisky?

Yes, Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ledaig 1997 24y Barc might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ledaig 1997 24y Barc can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a briny character. Indeed, this saltiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this saltiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc a tarred whisky?

Yes, Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is a whisky with an intensely textured flavour profile: you will be able to detect the smokiness of this whisky right from the first sip from your glass. It is a typical characteristic flavour in a particular type whisky that you have to (learn to) love.

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc a spicy whisky?

Yes, Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc a fruity whisky?

Yes, Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Ledaig 1997 24y Barc pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ledaig 1997 24y Barc whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ledaig 1997 24y Barc have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc an independent bottling?

Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is a whisky of the Ledaig brand bottled by the independent bottler Blackadder. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ledaig 1997 24y Barc is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ledaig 1997 24y Barc a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ledaig 1997 24y Barc whisky from Ledaig is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
