Product info about Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5

Benrinnes 2010 11 Year Old Artist 5 presents a Speyside single malt through the independent lens of Signatory. Part of the Artist Edition, it brings together an 11-year maturation, a 2010 distillation vintage and bottling at 48%, giving the whisky a clearly defined identity within the Benrinnes name.

The sherry butt maturation gives the release its framework, while the available flavour profile points towards fruit, spice and floral notes rather than peat, salt or heavy wood influence. That makes it a whisky with a focused Speyside character, shaped by cask choice but not described as smoke-driven or heavily oaked.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we place with the more distinctive independent Scotch selections. With 1639 bottles produced and the last bottles now indicated, it feels like a specific snapshot of Benrinnes from Signatory's Artist Edition rather than a standard ongoing release.

The available flavour profile highlights fruit, spice and floral notes as the main points of reference. Peat, salt and wood are not marked as significant elements, so this Benrinnes should not be presented as smoky or strongly oak-led. The sherry butt maturation gives context to the 11-year-old single malt, with the emphasis placed on aromatic lift and a fruit-spice style.

About BENRINNES

Benrinnes is a traditional Speyside distillery with a rather eventful history. The initial distillery Lyne of Ruthrie from 1826 was destroyed by a flood. Afterwards it was rebuilt a few kilometers further away. After several bankruptcies and a serious fire, the distillery was thoroughly renewed in 1955. Among other things, 3 pot stills were added, bringing the total to 6. Some time later, they even switched to a unique process involving partial triple distillation using their two wash stills and four spirit stills. In 2007, they switched back to traditional double distillation.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5?

Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 a single cask whisky?

No, Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is not a single cask whisky.

Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a floral character. Indeed, this florality is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this florality is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 a spicy whisky?

Yes, Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 a fruity whisky?

Yes, Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 an independent bottling?

Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is a whisky of the Benrinnes brand bottled by the independent bottler Signatory. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Benrinnes 2010 11y Artist 5 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
