About IZARRA
Izarra is a liqueur brand originating from the Basque Country in the southwest of France. Since its founding in 1906 by the pharmacist and botanist Joseph Grattau, this herbal drink is still produced in the region around Bayonne. Izarra means star in Basque and the name refers to the regional character and inspiration from local herbs and plants. The liqueur is a mixture of various plant extracts, spices, and other natural ingredients, distilled according to a traditional recipe that is still carefully preserved today. Izarra is available in two varieties: the green Izarra Verte, mainly known for its distinctly fresh and herbal character, and the yellow Izarra Jaune, which is somewhat softer and milder in taste. Because of its pronounced flavors, the liqueur is popular as a digestif, in cocktails, or as an addition to desserts, and is often associated with Basque identity. Izarra is currently produced by the Bacalado distillery on the outskirts of Bayonne, with the original recipe remaining the starting point. The combination of history, local botanicals, and the authentic production process makes this a distinctive liqueur that holds a permanent place within the French liqueur tradition.
