Cointreau is a classic French liqueur that originated in Angers, where it was developed in the mid-19th century by the brothers Edouard and Adolphe Cointreau. The liqueur is distilled from a combination of sweet and bitter orange peels, which provides a distinct fresh and clear citrus aroma that is characteristic of Cointreau. Since its introduction in 1875, the brand has established itself as a staple in the world of orange liqueurs, in part due to a carefully guarded recipe whose essence has remained unchanged for more than a century. The product contains no artificial flavorings or colorings. Cointreau is flexible and versatile in use: it is often drunk neat, but is best known as an important ingredient in various international cocktails, such as the Margarita, Cosmopolitan and Sidecar. Today, Cointreau is part of the French beverage group Remy Cointreau, but production remains based in Angers.
