Product info about The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged

The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged places maturation at the centre of the conversation. Its name gives the essential story: a gin aged for three years, presented specifically as an Islay Cask Aged release. That immediately sets it apart from the more familiar idea of gin as a young, unaged spirit.

At 46%, this British gin has the strength to carry that aged identity with confidence. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see it as a bottle for drinkers who are curious about gin from a different angle, where time in cask is part of the character rather than a background detail.

No detailed producer notes or tasting description are supplied, so the story is best kept precise: The Botanist, three years old, Islay Cask Aged and bottled at 46%. For anyone exploring the boundary between gin and cask maturation, that is the point of interest here.

About THE BOTANIST

The Botanist is a gin brand originating from the island of Islay in Scotland, where it is produced by Bruichladdich Distillery. Due to its location on Islay, The Botanist stands out in the world of gin, as the island is mainly known for the production of Scottish whisky. The Botanist gin is made with a remarkable selection of no less than 22 locally foraged botanicals, in addition to classic gin ingredients such as juniper berries. These herbs and plants are handpicked on Islay, giving the gin a distinct regional character. The gin is distilled in an old Lomond pot still, which was restored by Bruichladdich and is known as Ugly Betty for this gin. Since its launch in 2010, The Botanist has made a name for itself as a versatile, floral, and spicy gin, suitable for both classic gin and tonic combinations and more creative cocktails. The connection with nature and the focus on local plants are central to the brand's philosophy, reflected in both the production and the presentation of the bottle. The Botanist is part of the Remy Cointreau portfolio group, since this group became owner of Bruichladdich Distillery.

Frequently asked questions

Is The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged suitable to give as a gift?

Although this The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular gin combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced gin-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged een goede keuze voor mij?

This The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged can be a gin one that suits you if you like a gin with a floral character. Indeed, this florality is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this florality is of course only one part of the overall character of this gin.

Is The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged a spicy gin?

Yes, The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged is a gin with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this gin will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged a fruity gin?

Yes, The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged is a gin with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this gin will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Is The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged a sweet gin?

By itself, yes, but the sweetness in this The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged gin is only slightly present in the flavour profile.

Sweet gin is usually the most accessible version. Because that pronounced sweetness is missing here, it may be a gin that does not strike a mainstream chord with everyone.

Does The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged is higher than what you would expect from an average gin expect. While not extremely exceptional, a gin of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most gin is usually closer to 40%.

Is The Botanist 3y Islay Cask Aged vegan?
