About BECHEROVKA

Becherovka is a herbal liqueur from the Czech Republic that is mainly associated with the city of Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad). The origin of this drink dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, when pharmacist Josef Vitus Becher developed the recipe in 1807 together with the English physician Dr. Frobrig. The recipe has always remained strictly secret and is reportedly known by only two people at any given time. Becherovka is produced on the basis of alcohol, water, sugar, and a careful blend of about twenty different herbs and spices. The process includes a period of maceration and a maturation of several months in oak barrels, which gives the liqueur its distinctive spicy and complex flavor. Becherovka is often drunk pure or chilled as a digestif, but the brand is also regularly used as an ingredient in cocktails, with the Beton (with tonic) being a well-known serving style. With its distinctive character and long history, the brand has grown into one of the most recognizable beverage brands from the Czech Republic. Nowadays, Becherovka is owned by the international beverage group Pernod Ricard.
