This Pommard 1er Cru 2022 Cuvée Dames de la Charité brings together a very Burgundian set of references: Pommard in the Côte de Beaune, the Hospices de Beaune tradition and Maison Prosper Maufoux in this magnum release. The cuvée name refers to the Sisters of Charity, remembered for their care for the poor and sick and for their connection with the Hospices de Beaune.Made from Pinot Noir, the wine draws on several Premier Cru climats in Pommard, including Les Rugiens, Les Petits Epenots, Les Combes Dessus and La Refène. That blend of origins matters here. Les Petits Epenots is associated with finesse, La Refène with limestone soils and ageing potential, while the stony marl soils of Les Rugiens contribute tension to the finish.
The production details point to careful handling: hand-picked grapes brought in small crates, sorting, destemming, a cold pre-fermentation maceration and long cuvaisons with daily pigeage.
