Pagodes de Cos 2019 is a red Bordeaux from Saint-Estèphe, produced by Château Cos d'Estournel. As the estate's second wine, it is described by the château as another interpretation of the Cos d'Estournel terroir, rather than simply a lighter copy of the Grand Vin. The fruit comes from clearly identified estate parcels, with vines averaging around 40 years of age.The blend is led by cabernet sauvignon, supported by merlot, cabernet franc and a small proportion of petit verdot. In 2019, the growing season brought heat and dryness, but also well-timed rainfall that helped the grapes continue ripening. The château mentions small, concentrated cabernet sauvignon and merlot berries with good phenolic maturity. In the cellar, fermentation was carried out at lower temperatures than usual to avoid over-extraction.
Maturation in 20% new barriques keeps the oak presence measured. That is very much in line with the role of Pagodes de Cos: a structured Saint-Estèphe with depth, freshness and energy. Château Cos d'Estournel is a renowned winery from the French Bordeaux region, specifically located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the Médoc. The estate was founded in the early 19th century by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, who dedicated himself to producing complex and characterful wines exclusively from his own vineyards. Cos d'Estournel is known as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé since the famous 1855 classification, in which it was counted among the top of the region. The winery covers about 100 hectares and has been expanded and modernized during various periods, but the distinctive Asian-inspired architecture and the impressive gatehouse are still iconic. The wine of Château Cos d'Estournel is traditionally characterized by a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented by Merlot and occasionally small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
