Flavour notes

Jura 18y opens with toffee on the nose, giving a soft and welcoming first impression. Darker fruit then comes through, with black forest fruits reflecting the influence of the red wine cask finish.

The finish moves towards bitter chocolate, adding a drier, more mature note. Wood, spice and fruit sit in the background with a gentle touch, while smoke and salty notes do not define the style.

Product info about Jura 18y

Jura 18y is a Scottish single malt from Jura, built around long maturation and a carefully chosen finish. It spends 18 years in ex-Bourbon barrels made from American white oak before being finished in refined red wine casks, adding another layer to the whisky's mature foundation.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a whisky for drinkers who enjoy subtle development rather than overt intensity. The profile points to gentle wood, light spice and a fruit accent, with no peated character taking the lead. That makes the red wine finish feel especially relevant, giving the whisky a darker, more polished edge without overwhelming its single malt identity.

Bottled at 44%, it has enough strength to carry its age and cask influence while keeping a composed, elegant feel.

About JURA

Jura distillery is quite remote. The island of Jura itself is a beautiful piece of nature. More than 200 people live there, there is one road, one hotel, one shop, one distillery and a few thousand deer. You get to the island via a ferry from the mainland (about three hours sailing) or with a short five-minute crossing from Port Askaig on that other island, Islay. A lot of hassle you will say, but it is definitely worth a visit. The crossing from Islay is the prettiest, with the over-famous Paps of Jura always dominantly in sight.

The distillery itself is one with a long history. After being established in 1871, it operated for about 30 years before closing in 1901. For more than 60 years there was no distillation at Jura until it became active again in 1963. When Whyte & Mackay became the owners in 1993, the story gained momentum. Work is done on a fine base range and it amasses a lot of popularity; at one point, Jura was the third best-selling single malt in the UK. In 2018, the entire base range is being revamped to what it is today. The most notable expression is probably the Seven Wood, a whisky that, after an initial maturation in bourbon casks (like everything made at Jura), is further matured in casks made from six different types of French oak; after that second maturation, it is painstakingly assembled from those different cask maturities, resulting in a unique flavour profile.

At Jura, they're not averse to a bit of experimentation either; especially when it comes to unique barrels, many exciting bottlings have come from this beautiful island.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Jura 18y?

Jura 18y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Jura 18y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Jura 18y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Jura 18y a single cask whisky?

No, Jura 18y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Jura 18y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Jura 18y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Jura 18y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Jura 18y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Jura 18y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Jura 18y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Jura 18y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Jura 18y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Jura 18y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Jura 18y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Jura 18y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Jura 18y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Jura 18y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Jura 18y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Jura 18y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Jura 18y an independent bottling?

No, Jura 18y is an official bottling of Jura.

Is Jura 18y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Jura 18y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Jura 18y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Jura 18y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Jura 18y whisky from Jura is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
