Flavour notes

The aroma opens with macerated raisins, dates and ripe figs, followed by cedarwood, old leather and delicate oriental spices such as saffron and cardamom. It feels deep and elegant, with the maturity of the whisky clearly coming through.

On the palate it starts silky and full. 70% dark chocolate, bitter orange marmalade and caramelised pecans give it a rich centre, while dark fruit and noble spice add further depth. The finish is long, warm and enveloping, with sherry-seasoned oak, Havana tobacco and mocha lingering on.

Product info about Tamdhu 18 Years

Tamdhu 18 Years is a Speyside single malt built around patience and carefully chosen sherry wood. It has spent its full eighteen years in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, giving the whisky a mature, layered personality where dark fruit, polished wood and spice have had time to settle into one another.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Tamdhu for drinkers who enjoy sherry maturation with real depth rather than simple sweetness. The cask influence is clear, but what makes it engaging is the way the whisky carries that richness with poise: generous, structured and quietly refined.

As an 18-year-old expression, it stands as a confident highlight within Tamdhu's age range. The long maturation gives it a composed, memorable style that feels very much focused on craftsmanship and the character of first-fill Oloroso casks.

About TAMDHU

Nestled in the Speyside region, the heart of Scottish whisky production, the Tamdhu distillery stands out for its unwavering dedication to sherry. Since its founding in 1897, Tamdhu has built its reputation around a unique principle: every drop of its single malt is matured exclusively in first-class Spanish oak sherry casks. Unlike many other distilleries that use a mix of casks (bourbon, sherry, etc.), Tamdhu fully commits to the richness and complexity of Oloroso sherry casks. This approach gives its whiskies a generous character, with pronounced notes of dried fruit (raisin, apricot), gentle spices, and honey. The distillery, whose name means the little black hill in Scottish Gaelic, still works with its original larchwood washbacks and uses pure water from the Ailie Brae spring. Today, Tamdhu is praised by connoisseurs for expressions such as the "Tamdhu 12 Year Old," a whisky with an intense and fruity profile that perfectly embodies the deep and warm identity of the distillery.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Tamdhu 18 Years?

Tamdhu 18 Years is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Tamdhu 18 Years a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Tamdhu 18 Years is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Tamdhu 18 Years a single cask whisky?

No, Tamdhu 18 Years is not a single cask whisky.

Is Tamdhu 18 Years a whisky at cask strength?

No, Tamdhu 18 Years is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Tamdhu 18 Years suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Tamdhu 18 Years is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Tamdhu 18 Years might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Tamdhu 18 Years een goede keuze voor mij?

This Tamdhu 18 Years can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Tamdhu 18 Years a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Tamdhu 18 Years whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Tamdhu 18 Years a spicy whisky?

Yes, Tamdhu 18 Years is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Tamdhu 18 Years a fruity whisky?

Yes, Tamdhu 18 Years is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Tamdhu 18 Years pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Tamdhu 18 Years whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Tamdhu 18 Years have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Tamdhu 18 Years is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Tamdhu 18 Years an independent bottling?

No, Tamdhu 18 Years is an official bottling of Tamdhu.

Is Tamdhu 18 Years suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Tamdhu 18 Years is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Tamdhu 18 Years vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
