Flavour notes

The nose brings grilled pineapple first, followed by malty notes that give the whisky a grounded, cereal-like backbone. The fruit is vivid and clearly present.

On the palate, tropical sweetness is matched by a mineral freshness that keeps the profile lively. The finish moves into manuka honey and white pepper, leaving a contrast of soft sweetness and clean spice.

Product info about The Cargill 2016 5y

The Cargill 2016 5y is not a routine Scottish blended malt. Its character comes from an unusual meeting point: Ardnamurchan from the Highlands and Cardrona from New Zealand brought together in an innovative transcontinental fusion.

Four different casks sit behind this release, with bourbon and pinot noir influences shaping the whisky. The fruit is clearly part of the conversation, while wood, gentle spice, floral touches and a light salty edge add supporting detail. Bottled at cask strength, 57.4%, it keeps a direct and energetic feel.

Distilled in 2016 and bottled in 2021, this 5-year-old release was limited to 1200 bottles. At Drankenshop Broekmans, it stands out for the way it steps outside the expected path: no peat-driven profile, but a vivid whisky built around tropical sweetness, mineral freshness and a peppery finish.

About ARDNAMURCHAN

Ardnamurchan is a relatively young Scottish whisky brand, originating from the Ardnamurchan Distillery which has operated since 2014 on the namesake peninsula in the west of the Highlands. The distillery is owned by Adelphi, an independent Scottish bottler with a long tradition, which adds an interesting extra layer to the story for many whisky connoisseurs. Ardnamurchan focuses on sustainable and environmentally conscious production: the distillery runs largely on local hydropower and locally sourced wood, which fits their pursuit of transparency and provenance. The brand is known for working with both peated and unpeated barley, which is reflected in the range, offering a varied flavor profile from subtly smoky to lightly fruity and fresh. Maturation typically takes place in a mix of bourbon and sherry casks, allowing Ardnamurchan to develop characterful single malts often appreciated for their balance and modern approach. Although the brand does not yet have a long history, it has already built a modest but growing reputation among whisky enthusiasts seeking newer Scottish single malts with a clear identity and environmentally conscious philosophy.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is The Cargill 2016 5y?

The Cargill 2016 5y is a blended malt whisky .

Blended malt whisky is a blend of exclusively malt whiskies sourced from different distilleries. The major difference from "regular" blended whisky is that blended malts do not use grain whisky.

Although not common, Compass Box's trendy Blended Malt Whiskies might ring a bell. They do not call themselves "blenders", but "whiskymakers" and they select the best whiskies from the best distilleries for their unique blends.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, The Cargill 2016 5y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is The Cargill 2016 5y a single cask whisky?

Yes, The Cargill 2016 5y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, The Cargill 2016 5y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this The Cargill 2016 5y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one The Cargill 2016 5y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y een goede keuze voor mij?

This The Cargill 2016 5y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a fruity character. Indeed, this fruitiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this The Cargill 2016 5y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this The Cargill 2016 5y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is The Cargill 2016 5y a fruity whisky?

Yes, The Cargill 2016 5y is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink The Cargill 2016 5y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this The Cargill 2016 5y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does The Cargill 2016 5y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y an independent bottling?

The Cargill 2016 5y is a whisky of the Ardnamurchan brand bottled by the independent bottler Adelphi. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This The Cargill 2016 5y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is The Cargill 2016 5y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this The Cargill 2016 5y whisky from Ardnamurchan is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
