Flavour notes

On the nose, Dalmore 12y opens with a pronounced malty character, joined by floral and fruity notes of peach and apricot. It then moves towards brioche, cocoa powder and orange marmalade, giving the aroma a warm and developed feel.

The palate is neatly poised between sweetness and bitterness. Orange comes through again, followed by nutty tones and a subtle saline touch. The finish is long and spicy, with mint, a slightly vegetal edge and a final pinch of salt.

Product info about Dalmore 12y

Dalmore 12y is a Highland single malt built around a thoughtful combination of bourbon and sherry cask maturation. It starts life in bourbon casks, after which half of the whisky is moved into sherry casks. The two parts are then brought back together, giving this 12-year-old its polished classic style with both strength and elegance.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of whisky we like to use when explaining how cask influence shapes a single malt. The bourbon-matured part keeps the whisky malt-driven and approachable in structure, while the sherry casks add depth through wood, cocoa, orange and spice.

There is no peat smoke at the centre of the experience here. Dalmore 12y leans instead towards malt, fruit, a clear wood influence and a spicy finish. It feels familiar in the best sense: composed, recognisable and layered enough to reward a calm glass.

About DALMORE

Dalmore's bottles immediately stand out in your whisky cabinet. They are adorned with a beautiful silver deer head, with impressive twelve-pointed antlers. This so-called 'twelve-point stag' is not on there for no reason, this is a very important symbol of the Scottish kings. The fact that Dalmore is allowed to wear this symbol is quite an honour bestowed on them in 1263. That's when one of the ancestors of the founder of Dalmore Distillery, a member of the Campbell clan, saved the then Scottish king Alexander's life during a hunting party. In gratitude, they were given the honour of carrying the deer's head with the 12-pointed antlers in the coat of arms. So don't just say Deer to a Twelve-Point-Stag in Scotland!

The distillery itself was founded in 1839 in the village of Alness. It now belongs to the Whyte & Mackay group, which also operates Jura, Fettercairn and Tamnavulin, among others. Dalmore is known as a luxurious dram, with a rich flavour. The frequent use of high-quality sherry casks is no stranger to this flavour profile. Audience favourites in the range include the 12yo (the base) the Cigar Malt Reserve and the King Alexander III.

With a bottle of Dalmore, you immediately show that you know what you're doing when it comes to whisky, and that you don't compromise when it comes to taste.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Dalmore 12y?

Dalmore 12y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Dalmore 12y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Dalmore 12y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Dalmore 12y a single cask whisky?

No, Dalmore 12y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Dalmore 12y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Dalmore 12y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Dalmore 12y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Dalmore 12y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Dalmore 12y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Dalmore 12y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Dalmore 12y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Dalmore 12y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Dalmore 12y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Dalmore 12y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Dalmore 12y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Dalmore 12y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Dalmore 12y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Dalmore 12y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Dalmore 12y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Dalmore 12y have a high alcohol content?

This whisky from Dalmore has a normal alcohol content. Within whisky alcohol levels of up to 43% are most common.

Is Dalmore 12y an independent bottling?

No, Dalmore 12y is an official bottling of Dalmore.

Is Dalmore 12y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Dalmore 12y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Dalmore 12y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Dalmore 12y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Dalmore 12y whisky from Dalmore is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
