Flavour notes

The aroma starts fresh and fruity, showing apple, citrus and a clear note of salted butter caramel. On the palate, more structure appears through wood, a smoky touch and honey, giving the whisky a fuller and more spiced expression.

The finish is long, with lively spicy notes and an aniseed-like character. It leaves the whisky feeling fresh at first, then more warming and defined as it fades.

Product info about Armorik Double Maturation

Armorik Double Maturation is a French single malt from Brittany, shaped by a clear focus on maturation. It spends at least five years in Armorik's traditional oak casks, followed by a few months of finishing in sherry casks. That second stage gives the whisky its name and adds a spiced, fruity dimension while keeping its distinctive Breton identity in view.

Bottled at 46%, it is presented with enough strength to carry its aromatic richness. The result is a whisky with a fresh and fruit-led opening, supported by wood influence and a more seasoned, characterful side as it develops in the glass.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we like to point out to customers who enjoy exploring single malt beyond the familiar regions. As these are the last bottles, Armorik Double Maturation feels like a whisky to open thoughtfully and enjoy for its particular French perspective.

About ARMORIK

The Distillerie de Warenghem can be found in the small village of Lannion, on the north coast of Brittany. It has been owned by the same family for more than 100 years, where they proudly produce a range of wonderful distillates. Under the brand name Armorik, they also produce an exceptional single malt, a category they pioneered in France.

The distillery was founded in the year 1900 by Leon Warenghem, who was originally from the north of France. In those early years, they made a name for themselves with a number of plant labels. Elixir D'Armorique, a blend of 35 plants, is still the distillery's flagship offering. After World War I, it also looks outside the region, and Warenghem becomes more and more an esteemed name across France. The range is systematically expanded to include other liqueurs and they also expand to selling through supermarkets, allowing them to reach even more aficionados.

The 1980s then see the first steps towards whisky production. In 1987, the very first Breton whisky is launched, the WB, a blend of 25% malt whisky and 75% grain whisky. The next step is the creation of the very first distillery in France to distil only whisky, in 1993. In 1998, there is the crowning glory, with the launch of Armorik, the first single malt whisky from Brittany and France. recognition follows through a variety of awards, with the 2013 election as the best European whisky at the World Whiskies Awards.

Today, Armorik is a well-established whisky offering in Europe, and a safe choice for those looking for quality and a unique taste experience.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Armorik Double Maturation?

Armorik Double Maturation is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Armorik Double Maturation a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, Armorik Double Maturation is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Armorik Double Maturation a single cask whisky?

No, Armorik Double Maturation is not a single cask whisky.

Is Armorik Double Maturation a whisky at cask strength?

No, Armorik Double Maturation is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Armorik Double Maturation suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Armorik Double Maturation is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Armorik Double Maturation might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Armorik Double Maturation een goede keuze voor mij?

This Armorik Double Maturation can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Armorik Double Maturation a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Armorik Double Maturation whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Armorik Double Maturation a spicy whisky?

Yes, Armorik Double Maturation is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Armorik Double Maturation a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Armorik Double Maturation is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Armorik Double Maturation pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Armorik Double Maturation whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Armorik Double Maturation have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Armorik Double Maturation is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Armorik Double Maturation an independent bottling?

No, Armorik Double Maturation is an official bottling of Armorik.

Is Armorik Double Maturation suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Armorik Double Maturation is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from France it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.
