Flavour notes

The aroma opens with sweet vanilla before the fruit gradually comes through: kiwi, banana and melon, with a light dusting of cocoa powder on top.

On the palate it is soft and sweet in texture, lifted by a touch of cinnamon. Arran's citrus character stays clearly present against a background of sweet oak. The finish moves smoothly across the tongue, reminiscent of golden syrup, and fades gently.

Product info about Arran 10y

Arran 10y is a clear example of the fresh, lively single malt style associated with the Isle of Arran. It is built around vanilla and citrus, with a soft, easy-flowing feel that makes the whisky approachable without becoming plain.

The combination of sherry and bourbon casks brings sweetness, fruit and a gentle touch of spice, while the overall impression remains clean rather than smoky. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as one of those Scottish single malts that earns its place through clarity: bright fruit, a floral lift, soft oak and enough structure to keep the glass interesting.

Bottled at 46%, it has enough strength to carry its flavours well, while staying smooth and lively in style. Additional information can be found at https://www.arranwhisky.com/

About ARRAN

Arran Whisky is made at the still fairly young Lochranza Distillery. The first plans for it were made in 1993 and the first alcohol ran out of the stills there in 1995. That means they will celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2025, hopefully resulting in a nice 30yo? Stay tuned for that news!

Lochranza Distillery can be found in the village of the same name in the north of the Isle of Arran. That's on the west coast of Scotland, a stone's throw from Glasgow. It's a popular weekend trip from Glasgow, because on Arran you'll find a sort of miniature version of Scotland. A short distance away (the road around the whole island is about 80 km in total) you'll find mountains, valleys, beautiful green meadows, beautiful beaches and everything that makes Scotland so enticing for foodies: fresh produce from the land and sea, and whisky, of course. The distillery's location among the mountains in the north of the island is unquestionably spectacular. So must have thought the eagles who were already living there when the distillery was built. They have since become part of the identity of Arran whisky and you can observe them on site to your heart's content.

The whisky made by Lochranza is much loved. It is characterised by a distinctly fruity character that appeals to novice tasters and experienced whisky lovers alike. The basic range includes whiskies that can now be called modern classics such as the 10yo, the Quarter Cask and the Sherry Cask. All of them are tasty, accessible and affordable whiskies of high quality, carefully blended from the casks aged in their warehouses. The Machrie Moor, the lightly peated version made at Lochranza, is also a favourite of many, but will no longer be produced from 2026, as the group has set up a second distillery in the south of the island making only peated whisky (Lagg Distillery).

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Arran 10y?

Arran 10y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Arran 10y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Arran 10y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Arran 10y a single cask whisky?

No, Arran 10y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Arran 10y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Arran 10y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Arran 10y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Arran 10y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Arran 10y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Arran 10y a popular whisky?

Absolutely! Arran 10y is a whisky that is currently included in our Top 100. This top contains the 100 products that were sold most often in our shops over the past 12 months, which is a good indicator of the product's stable popularity over a longer period of time.

Is Arran 10y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Arran 10y can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a floral character. Indeed, this florality is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this florality is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Arran 10y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Arran 10y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Arran 10y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Arran 10y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Arran 10y a fruity whisky?

Yes, Arran 10y is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Arran 10y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Arran 10y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Arran 10y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Arran 10y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Arran 10y an independent bottling?

No, Arran 10y is an official bottling of Arran.

Is Arran 10y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Arran 10y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Arran 10y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Arran 10y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Arran 10y whisky from Arran is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
