St Patrick's Day - All about Irish Whiskey

On 17 March, everything turns green for the Irish National Holiday, St Patrick's Day. We leave the green costumes, orange beards, top hats and parades behind for a while and focus on what this day is really all about: booze. In this blog, you will discover all about Irish whiskey and how best to drink it on such a special day. Because what the heart is full of...

Different kinds of Irish whiskey

In our wide range you will find different types of Irish whiskey, 188 to be precise. From single malt, single pot still to blended whiskey. Single malt is made from 100% malted barley and is distilled in a pot still. Single pot still whiskey is also distilled in a pot still, but contains a mix of malted and unmalted barley. Finally, blended whiskey consists of a mix of different types of whiskey.

With fine Irish brands such as Sailor's Home, Teeling, Waterford and The Irishman we have an extensive and sophisticated collection for every whiskey connoisseur.

Sailor's Home is totally committed to making the very best Irish whiskeys, inspired by craftsmanship and a passion for discovery. And who is at the helm of this adventure? None other than legendary master distiller Jack Ó'Sé.

How to drink Irish whiskey on Saint Patrick's Day

Everyone has their own style when it comes to drinking whiskey: straight, mixed with water or the all-time favourite 'on the rocks'. But on a day like Saint Patrick's Day, could it be a little more special? Then we have the perfect recommendations for you!

Irish Breakfast

Drink your whiskey like the real Irish: with a splash of water a piece of Irish brown bread.

Irish Coffee

Behind the origins of Irish Coffee, by the way, there is a nice little story. Inventor Joe Sheridan worked in a bar at one of Europe's biggest airports, Foyes. Since the weather in Western Europe can be terrible, Joe decided to make a drink to warm his guests. He threw a splash of whiskey into their coffee. When an American traveller drank it for the first time, he asked, " Is this Brazilian coffee?" to which Joe replied, "No my friend, this is Irish Coffee."

Tip: go next level with your next Irish Coffee and replace the classic Jameson or Bushmills with a Teeling whiskey.

Combine 44 ml of Irish whiskey with 1 cup of hot coffee. Add sugar and top with whipped cream.

Emerald

Combining whiskey and vermouth, the Emerald cocktail is best thought of as the Irish version of the well-known Manhattan cocktail.

Mix 44 ml Irish whiskey, 15 ml vermouth or green chartreuse and 15 ml lemon juice. Add ice and shake well. Serve in a chilled glass and garnish with a slice of lime.

Irish Sour

The Irish Sour is a variation on the classic Whisky Sour, with a base of -however- Irish whiskey. With a whisky sour, you bring sour and sweet together in one glass. By adding egg white before shaking, you can also create a nice white head on your cocktail.

Mix 59 ml Irish whiskey with 22 ml fresh lemon juice and 15 ml sugar syrup. Add ice and shake vigorously. Serve in a chilled glass and garnish with a cherry.

Dublin Mule

With the Dublin Mule, you make an Irish version of the famous Moscow Mule. The Dublin Mule is a classic cocktail for lovers of the whiskey/ginger beer combination, but with a delicious Irish whiskey as a base.

Mix 59ml Irish whiskey with 22ml fresh lime juice and 47ml ginger beer. Serve in a copper mug filled with ice and stir gently. Garnish with a slice of lime.

Baileys

Not so much time to put together your own cocktail, or just playing it safe anyway? Then Baileys is an Irish classic that will please most. Gluckman and Seymour-Davis went to a nearby supermarket after a call from IDV. There they bought Jameson Irish whiskey and Cadbury chocolate powder. They mixed it in a washed bottle of Schweppes and the primitive recipe for Baileys was born.

I've known Broekmans since I graduated in 2006 and thanks to Jan I've come to know the passion for spirits.  I dedicate myself every day to the webshop, customer service and all the IT involved.  In my spare time, besides whiskey, I can also really enjoy rum, but just as much as a gin tonic or a simple bellini.  In the words of Martien Meiland, if there's no alcohol in it, don't call me!
