Despagne Girolate 2019 Red is a Bordeaux from the Entre-deux-Mers, near Naujan-et-Postiac. The name Girolate comes from the lieu-dit linked to the first parcels used for this cuvée. The Despagne family works with clay-limestone soils and very dense planting, giving this Merlot-based wine a serious, carefully shaped identity.
What makes the wine stand out is its cellar approach. Fermentation and ageing take place in barriques, not with the aim of making the oak dominate, but to bring roundness and a creamier feel to the wine. The 2019 vintage also adds context: it was an atypical growing season, and the work in the vineyard was directed towards keeping freshness, balance and precision alongside ripeness.

Despagne Girolate 2019 Rouge is a Bordeaux built around Merlot, but with a level of intent that sets it apart from a simple regional red. It comes from the Girolate lieu-dit in Entre-Deux-Mers, between the Garonne and Dordogne, from clay over limestone soils. Vignobles Despagne works a densely planted Merlot vineyard here, with 10,000 vines per hectare, a detail more often associated with serious terroir-driven Bordeaux than with everyday bottlings.
Girolate is certified organic. The wine is vinified parcel by parcel in small wooden vats, with the barrels rotated on Oxoline racks during fermentation to keep extraction and tannin development controlled and gentle. Ageing in French oak barriques adds to the wine's structured, polished Bordeaux style.

Girolate Blanc 2019 is a dry white Bordeaux from Despagne, grown in the Entre-deux-Mers area around Naujan-et-Postiac. It comes from the Girolate lieu-dit, described as a clay-limestone terroir with very densely planted vines. The 2019 white cuvée is made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle.
Its appeal lies in the meeting point between freshness and texture. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with careful attention to individual parcels, while fermentation takes place in oak barriques. In this wine, the barrique work is described less as a source of overt oak flavour and more as a way to bring roundness, creaminess and depth to a naturally fresh Bordeaux Blanc.
For Despagne, 2019 was a year that required close control in the (…)
