A 21-year-old Japanese whisky has become increasingly rare, especially after the strong global interest in Japanese whisky during the early years of the 21st century, when many mature stocks became depleted.
Named after Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky, this release pays tribute to an important figure in Japanese whisky history. It is a Pure Malt, a term still used in Japan for what is commonly described as a Blended Malt: a composition of malt whiskies from different distilleries. Every malt in the blend has matured for at least 21 years in oak casks, and the whisky is bottled at 43% ABV.

Taketsuru Essentials 2026 carries a strong sense of place within the story of Nikka Whisky. Taketsuru Pure Malt was created as a tribute to Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka and one of the key pioneers of Japanese whisky. This release looks back to that foundation while also pointing towards the 30th anniversary of Taketsuru Pure Malt in 2030.
Essentials 2026 is the first release in a new limited-edition series planned to appear annually from 2026. Its composition includes malt whiskies from Yoichi and Miyagikyo from 2000, the year Taketsuru Pure Malt was created. The edition highlights more than 90 years of Nikka distillation expertise, with the distinctive character of Yoichi playing an important role.
