Singleton Of Ord 40y is part of Singleton's Epicurean Odyssey Series, a range built around the pursuit of deeply pleasurable flavour through extended maturation. The remarkable point here is the role of the second maturation: it is not a brief finishing touch, but a major part of the whisky's life.
This 40-year-old Glen Ord was moved into rum casks when it was 12 years old, then left to mature there for almost three further decades. That means the secondary maturation lasted more than twice as long as the initial one. Just before bottling, the casks were brought together in solera vats that had previously held Zacapa XO and Royal Rum, allowing the whisky to settle into its final balance.
