Enjoy construction leave with these top manly drinks

Construction leave is in sight! A time when a lot of men put down their tools for a while and enjoy well-deserved rest. And we can't let this go unnoticed! In the past, we have looked at women's favourite drinks. But now we ask: which drinks exude the ultimate male image?

Of course, taste varies from person to person and everyone is free to choose what they drink, regardless of gender. The most important thing is that you enjoy what you drink! Nevertheless, we often see certain trends in drink choices between men and women. For example, you rarely see men at the bar with a brightly coloured cocktail, a mini umbrella or other decorations. Men tend more towards drinks with a robust character: tough ingredients, complex flavours and high-quality alcohol. This difference in preferences has a biological basis, according to some studies. Studies suggest that women are more likely to choose drinks with softer flavours, while men tend to enjoy powerful, intense flavours. Still, we should not underestimate the role of culture and social influences. Our environment and the way we grow up play a big role in the choices we make, including when it comes to drinks.

The most popular drinks among men

If we look at the alcoholic drinks that men drink the most, we can compile a clear top three. (* This ranking is based on various studies and reports on alcohol consumption among men)

Beer

Beer remains by far the most popular choice among men. Multiple studies show that beer is the favourite drink of more than 60% of male drinkers. This is especially true for younger men, who consume about 22 beer drinks per month on average (Source: Liquor Laboratory). Beer is often associated with relaxation and social occasions, such as watching sports games or a night out with friends (Source: Liquor Laboratory).

Whisky

Whisky comes second as men's favourite liquor. Types such as bourbon, Scotch and Tennessee whiskey are particularly popular. Whisky is often seen as a "masculine" drink because of its robust flavour and cultural associations with masculinity (Source: Liquor Laboratory). Surveys show that around 39% of male drinkers prefer spirits, with whiskey topping the list (Source: VinePair).

Vodka

Vodka is also a popular drink among men, both straight and in cocktails. It is appreciated for its versatility and the ability to mix it with different ingredients. Vodka Martinis and other classic cocktails with vodka remain popular in bars worldwide (Source:Liquor Laboratory)(Source: VinePair).

Our male followers choose...

To add more power to this blog, we asked you - our followers. What are your favourite drinks, gentlemen? We list them briefly.

Scotch whisky

At number one is undisputedly the absolute winner: whisky, and more specifically, Scotch whisky. As discussed earlier, this is no surprise. You probably know someone close to you - your father, brother, best friend, grandfather, and so on - who likes to enjoy a good glass of whisky.

Cognac

Second on our list is cognac. This refined and luxurious drink also came up regularly in the poll. Cognac, known for its deep, complex flavours and rich aromas, is a symbol of elegance and craftsmanship.

Beer

And of course, in third place in our list, the indispensable classic: a well-chilled pint! We could already guess this favourite. Beer, in all its varieties, is a familiar choice often praised for its refreshing character and social appeal. For many men, a pint of beer is more than just a drink. It is a symbol of friendship and togetherness, a ritual passed down for generations

Which cocktails appeal to binks?

Cuba Libre

Cuba Libre has its origins at the beginning of the 20th century, around 1900, in Cuba. The name "Cuba Libre" literally means "Free Cuba" and has historical significance dating back to the Spanish-American War, during which Cuba fought for independence from Spain. The story goes that American soldiers in Cuba mixed white rum with cola and a dash of lime juice to celebrate Cuba's victory and freedom.

Ingredients:

  • 50 ml white rum
  • 120 ml cola
  • 10 ml fresh lime juice
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wedge for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
  2. Pour the rum over the ice.
  3. Add the cola.
  4. Stir briefly to mix the ingredients.
  5. Squeeze a slice of lime into the cocktail.
  6. Garnish with a lime slice.

Whisky Sour

The Whisky Sour is a classic cocktail that dates back to the 19th century. We don't find much about its exact origins, but it was first recorded in writing in 1862 in Jerry Thomas' "The Bartender's Guide", one of the first cocktail books. The basis of a "sour" cocktail is simple: a liquor, citrus, and a sweetener.

Ingredients:

  • 60 ml of whisky (preferably bourbon or rye)
  • 25 ml fresh lemon juice
  • 20 ml sugar syrup (1 part sugar dissolved in 1 part water)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: a dash of egg white (about 15 ml) for a softer texture
  • Cherry and/or orange slice for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Shake without ice: If using egg white, add the whisky, lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white to a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously without ice to whip up the egg white (also called a "dry shake").
  2. Shake with ice: Then add ice to the shaker and shake again until the outside of the shaker feels cold to the touch.
  3. Pour: Strain the cocktail into a glass filled with ice cubes. If you don't use egg whites, you can perform this step directly without the dry shake.
  4. Garnish: Garnish with a cherry and/or an orange slice.

These cocktails are definitely worth a try during construction leave! They are not only spicy, but also very easy to make.

As a creative jack-of-all-trades in the marketing world, I also bring that imaginative flair to my drink choices. Whether on a night out, sunny vacation or social gathering with girlfriends, I'm always in my element with a refreshing cocktail in hand. Cocktails have stolen my heart because of the endless possibilities to experiment and explore. My favorite cocktail of the moment is the "Lazy Red Cheeks"! A delicious cocktail using vodka as a base. I love vodka because it mixes perfectly with non-alcoholic drinks. My favorite spirit? Rum!
