5 whisky tips to unwrap under the Christmas tree

5 whisky tips to unwrap under the Christmas tree

Are you looking for a gift for someone who loves whisky, but has not given any specific preference or hints? Don't know where to start and worried that your choice won't live up to expectations? Or are you afraid of making a bad choice? Whether you're looking for the perfect Christmas present or birthday gift: we've got you covered! Here are some tips for the perfect gift, depending on your approach. With these tips, you are sure to be surprising and original, and charm every whisky lover with it.

Tip 1: It may cost something

Let's start with one of our newest brands in our portfolio: Tamdhu.

Tamdhu is a Speyside distillery with a rich history dating back to 1897. The name means "little dark hill" in Gaelic, and fits well with the characterful style of the whiskies produced there. After several periods of closure, Tamdhu was revived in 2011 by Ian Macleod Distillers, who gave the distillery a clear profile: whiskies matured entirely in carefully selected Oloroso sherry casks from Spain. Whereas Tamdhu used to serve primarily as a blending malt for brands like The Famous Grouse and J&B, today the focus is on premium single malts that stay true to that distinct sherry style.

The results are whiskies with a full, rich and deep character. Typical aromas of sultanas, plums, caramel, chocolate and roasted nuts are balanced by spicy notes of oak and a subtle dryness. Well-known bottlings such as the Tamdhu 12 Year Old and the Batch Strength series show how the distillery manages to combine intensity and elegance. Their exclusive maturation in sherry casks clearly sets Tamdhu whiskies apart from many other Speysiders - they are highly recommended for lovers of complex, fruity and luxurious malt whiskies with a distinct sweet-spicy depth.

Tamdhu is in a slightly more expensive price segment, but of course, for that price you get something. After all, these are single malt matured exclusively in first-fill sherry casks, which gives a rich and intense profile: real "Sherry Bombs"! Moreover, the bottles are beautifully designed.

Tip 2: for car lovers

This year, we have two runners-up for those who love cars and motorsport: the Glenfiddich 16y Aston Martin is a Scottish single malt released only this year, combining mainly spicy and fruity notes in a beautifully balanced whisky. A nice collab with Aston Martin reinforced by the car brand's logo on the bottle and tube, among other things.

A new, third edition of the Jack Daniel's collab with McLaren was also released in 2025. This Jack Daniel's N°7 McLaren 3rd Edition once again combines the classic Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey with the highly recognisable livery of McLaren F1. In a year when McLaren is doing incredibly well in the F1 standings, with Piastri and Norris leading the standings after all, this is obviously a dream collectible for any enthusiast.

Tip 3: Belgian on top

Those looking to come out a tad chauvinistic this year surprisingly have a Belgian whisky at their disposal that is not from Belgian Owl. After all, Braeckman's whisky is one from Oudenaarde.

Braeckman is a Belgian distillery best known for its traditional grain genevers and eau-de-vie, but has also built a reputation as a producer of high-quality whisky. For generations, the Braeckman family has been distilling quality grain spirits. Craftsmanship and authenticity are key, with great attention paid to the entire production process, from selecting the grains to maturing them in wooden barrels. Thanks to this artisanal approach, Braeckman offers a unique range that reflects Belgian distilling traditions and is loved by connoisseurs and spirits enthusiasts alike. Taste the character and finesse of Belgian whisky in every bottle of this brand.

Tip 4: Colourful, surprising, tasteful and from the other side of the world

If you are looking for a beautiful bottle with a colourful label, you are in the right place this year with the Starward Botrytis Cask.

At Starward, they do things just a little differently. Located in Melbourne, Australia, this fairly young distillery aims to capture the spirit of that city and the sense of gastronomic adventure in every bottle. Central to their approach is the use of wine casks from local vintners and barley from Australian farmers. They also want to make it clear that you shouldn't fear using whisky for foodpairing, for example, or in cocktails as well. Melbourne is not the foodie capital of Australia for nothing, where taste always takes precedence over snobbery and cleanliness. The combination of the city's influences, the region's wine casks and the warm climate allows their whisky to form a unique fruity flavour in a short space of time, which has given them a very special place on the whisky map.

Botrytis cinerea, also called "Noble Rot" (Noble Rot in English), is a microscopic fungus that infects certain grape varieties under very specific climatic conditions. This fungus transforms the composition of the grapes, creating exceptional liqueur wines.

Starward has used casks in which this particular wine has matured to age their Australian single malt. The sweet and fruity notes of the botrytis (apricot, honey, orange blossom) permeate the whisky and add a layer of refined complexity, while the barrel roasting introduces spicy and woody accents.

Tip 5: Ardnamurchan

Between the misty mountains and pristine shores of the Western Highlands lies one of Scotland's most intriguing distilleries: Ardnamurchan. Here, time sometimes seems to stand still, and yet it buzzes with energy and ambition. This place oozes tradition, but with a modern twist that keeps surprising the whisky world.

The distillery embodies the best of both worlds: a classic Highland malt style with deep character and oily texture, as well as a fresh, innovative approach to production and sustainability. At Ardnamurchan, it's not just about whisky. It is about connection with nature, transparency and sustainability. Water comes from nearby springs, energy is used efficiently, and each cask is selected with care.

The Ardnamurchan Core Single Malt is a unique whisky, made from a balanced blend of malted barley with and without peat (50/50). It is matured in sherry casks (35%) and bourbon casks (65%), offering remarkable aromatic complexity. Not cold-filtered and with a natural colour, it retains richness and authenticity. With an alcohol content of 46.8%, this whisky is packaged in a bottle made of 54% recycled glass and fitted with a QR code for blockchain traceability, embodying innovation and respect for the environment.

I've known Broekmans since I graduated in 2006 and thanks to Jan I've come to know the passion for spirits.  I dedicate myself every day to the webshop, customer service and all the IT involved.  In my spare time, besides whiskey, I can also really enjoy rum, but just as much as a gin tonic or a simple bellini.  In the words of Martien Meiland, if there's no alcohol in it, don't call me!
