Campbeltown - a small port town on the southern Kintyre peninsula - was Scotland's whisky mecca in the 19th century. More than 30 distilleries created a bustling economy and the town was nicknamed the whisky capital of the world. Today, only three are active - and Springbank Distillery is the beating heart of them.
Springbank is more than a whisky maker: it is a living museum of craft, a family-run business that still operates as it did 200 years ago. And yet it is anything but old-fashioned: their whiskies are loved, sought-after and - often - hard to come by around the world.

Buying Springbank whisky: a family legacy since 1828
Springbank was founded in 1828 by the Mitchell family and is still in their hands today. This is unusual: most Scottish distilleries have long been owned by large multinationals.
Springbank is one of the few that does everything themselves: malting, distilling, maturing and bottling. More than 70% of their barley is still worked manually on malting floors. It's hard work, but it gives the whisky a signature of its own that you won't find anywhere else. Campbeltown almost lost its official status as a whisky region, but thanks to Springbank and the reopening of Glengyle Distillery (where Kilkerran is made), the region remained officially recognised.

Three styles under one roof: Springbank, Hazelburn and Longrow
Springbank is unique in that three completely different whiskies are made within the same distillery.
Springbank
The classic style: 2.5 times distilled and lightly tart. Complex, oily, briny and maritime.
Lovers and collectors of Springbank are currently most often looking for Springbank 10y, Springbank 12y Cask Strength Batch 26, Springbank 12y Cask Strength Batch 27, Springbank 15y, Springbank Vintage 1998, Springbank 21y, Springbank 25y, Springbank 8y Local Barley, Springbank Palo Cortado and Springbank Amontillado.

Hazelburn
Triple-distilled and peat-free: soft, elegant and fruity. A whisky that is often more accessible but still retains Campbeltown depth.

Longrow
The smoky side of Springbank. Heavily peated, powerful and full-bodied, but with balance.
Lovers and collectors today are most looking for the Longrow 18y, the Longrow 21y and the Longrow 100 Proof .
Ordering Kilkerran: the voice of Glengyle Distillery
In 2004, the Mitchell family reopened Glengyle Distillery, a stone's throw from Springbank. Kilkerran is made there: a fresh, lightly-turbed distillate that is double-distilled. The name refers to Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain, the ancient settlement from which Campbeltown grew. Kilkerran is younger than the Springbank labels, but has quickly gained cult status.

Campbeltown Loch whisky: a blend with pride
Springbank also makes the Campbeltown Loch blend, which brings together several local malts with grain whisky. It is an accessible dram that reflects the style of the region - ideal as an everyday whisky.
Cult status and scarcity
Who says Springbank, says rare. Due to its small-scale and artisanal approach, production is deliberately limited. This often makes the bottles hard to find - and all the more desirable among collectors and connoisseurs.
As the market has been plagued by treasure hunters and bottle flippers for some time now, we too have been forced to include some rare releases in our loyalty programme. Through our savings system, our loyal customers will get the first chance to snatch up these rare releases.

I've known Broekmans since I graduated in 2006 and thanks to Jan I've come to know the passion for spirits. I dedicate myself every day to the webshop, customer service and all the IT involved. In my spare time, besides whiskey, I can also really enjoy rum, but just as much as a gin tonic or a simple bellini. In the words of Martien Meiland, if there's no alcohol in it, don't call me!
