A special feature of this rum is that it was created using the Solera system. What is the Solera system? This involves stacking barrels of different ages on top of each other, with the oldest rum sitting at the bottom. Bottles are filled from these lower barrels, and then the barrel is replenished with rum from the row above, etc. The result is a blend of quite a few different ages that results in a flavourful, complex final product that is still consistent in quality, style and recognisability. After all, according to the rules, the age must always be the youngest rum in the blend, which is not desirable when the bulk in the blend is older (and therefore more valuable). Conversely, one can also choose not to mention age, when predominantly young rum is diluted with a small amount of (very) old rum. In that case, the product is often marketed at a higher price, and to justify that high(er) price, a choice is made not to mention an age (which would otherwise be the youngest in the blend).
