In this blog, we go over with you some of the news and important events from September that you may have missed.
Arran 25 years old
The 25 year is the oldest standard Arran reference bottled to date. This 1995 blend of bourbon barrels and sherry casks received a finish on sherry butts and is bottled at 46%. The bottle comes in an engraved wooden gift box.
As a new bottling of the 25-year-old will be released next month, we are still offering the current version at a 7.5% discount until the end of September.

Kilchoman Islay 100% Islay 14th Edition
Kilchoman 100% Islay 14th Edition at 50% was distilled from Kilchoman's own 2013 and 2014 harvests and then matured for at least 9 years in a selection of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. The combination of bourbon and sherry cask maturation has created layers of vanilla, butterscotch and a rich fruity character that balance beautifully with the natural citrus sweetness and floral peat smoke of this 100% Islay spirit.
- Nose: Campfire smoke, citrus, orange zest, tropical fruit.
- Mouth: Creamy caramelised sugars, vanilla, lemon, pineapple, fresh ginger and smoky oak.
- Finish: Oily texture with rich sherry notes and lingering peat smoke
Holyrood Ambir
After exploring soft peat with Embra, Ambir continues with the use of special malts with a wide range of yeasts in the mash bills. The name is Scottish for amber. The ambition was to create a smooth, sweet whisky using sweet malts and fruity yeasts surrounded by spicy vanilla from the bourbon casks. A more than successful maturation based on 90% bourbon casks and 10% oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 49.8% without cold filtration.
- Nose: caramel, fudge and Demerara sugar
- Mouth: red fruit and vanilla
- Finish: silky with biscuit, slightly astringent and savoury
Holyrood Embra
The mindset for Embra was to pave the way to discovering tarted whisky. Edinburgh is the gateway to Scotland for many people and that is the idea behind this whisky. Holyrood aims to strike the perfect balance between the bold smoky flavours and textures of tarted whisky and still be accessible to a new whisky drinker. If someone says they don't like tarted whisky, this is the whisky to give them. That doesn't mean there is nothing for seasoned peated drinkers, as they have all the distinctive flavours and textures of a great whisky.
- Nose: A delicious mix of banana and syrup with notes of creamy boiled sweets and pineapple.
- Mouth: Syrup and marzipan mingle with a strong note of demerara sugar and a hint of candyfloss. Interrupted by classic sherry aromas of sultanas and sticky toffee finished with hints of savoury spices.
- Finish: lingering creamy caramel fudge and biscuits with a hint of chocolate.
Wolfburn Manzanilla
For this new expression, the Manzanilla Cask Finish, Wolfburn uses casks of Manzanilla sherry to add extra flavours at the end of the maturation period. This type of sherry is a dry and delicate wine with a floral character and it is not used very often in the whisky industry. The casks Wolfburn used had a wonderful dry nose. The result is a whisky with a distinctly fruity and full-bodied character.
- Nose: Syrup, cashew butter and a vinous overtone - deep and sweet.
- Mouth: oily, classic dry Manzanilla is evident, accented with rich fruit, sultanas, plums and dates and a slight honey note
- Finish: sweet wine, fruit and a hint of caramel

Inchdairnie is a new distillery in Fife that brings malt tradition into the modern world. From grain to bottle, the approach is innovative and the development of its whiskies revolves around just one thing: tantalising consumers' taste buds with a multidimensional approach, aiming to deliver unique complexity. Just take a look at their website. Hint: the video under Our Distillery already gives an impression of that innovative approach.
But now first, on to RyeLaw. It is a single distillery Fife Grain Scotch Whisky made with 53% malted rye and 47% malted barley. RyeLaw follows the rules for American Rye Whiskey, but in Scotland there is currently no legal definition for rye whisky and therefore they cannot legally use the term on the bottle. RyeLaw is the first release from InchDairnie Distillery in Fife and is the only whisky in the world made from rye and distilled in a Lomond Hill still.
- Nose: typical spiciness of rye mixed with soft oak over a gentle layer of vanilla.
- Mouth: pungent pepper hints from the rye wrapped in a mouth-filling oily viscosity and sweet biscuit, cereal and dried fruit notes.

I've known Broekmans since I graduated in 2006 and thanks to Jan I've come to know the passion for spirits. I dedicate myself every day to the webshop, customer service and all the IT involved. In my spare time, besides whiskey, I can also really enjoy rum, but just as much as a gin tonic or a simple bellini. In the words of Martien Meiland, if there's no alcohol in it, don't call me!
